How did the practice of scantily clad cheerleaders at sports games begin in this very prudish country?

Prior to the 1972 season, Cowboys president and general manager Tex Schramm decided to change the image of his cheerleaders to boost attendance. He recruited a dance squad and outfitted them in tiny star-spangled uniforms. Eventually, other professional sports teams adopted the trend.
