Man: I was hate crime victim

A Largo resident of Palestinian descent says a man yelled slurs at him at Sam's Club in Clearwater.

CLEARWATER - A Muslim civil rights organization is asking for an investigation into what they said was a hate crime at Sam's Club last week.

Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa Bay chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said Derar Ahmad, 30, a Largo resident of Palestinian descent, was shopping at Sam's Club, 2575 Gulf-to-Bay Blvd., on Jan. 24 when he was verbally and physically assaulted by another customer.

Bedier said he has asked the FBI to investigate.

Carol Michalik, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Tampa field office, said she received the request and is assessing the situation to see what action to take, if any.

Ahmad, a gas station manager, said he was speaking on his cell phone to his wife in Arabic when he entered the store. A man whom Ahmad said he had never seen before came running up to him and started yelling anti-Islamic and anti-Arab slurs.

"F--- your Allah," Ahmad said the man shouted. "F--- your Mohammed."

Ahmad said the man jabbed his finger at his head, forcing him to look down and shouted that Ahmad needed to go back to his own country.

Bedier and Ahmad said no Sam's Club employee intervened. When a security guard approached the two, Ahmad said, the guard told the men to take care of their business outside.

Another customer in the store, Deborah Butler, 45, witnessed the incident and said she first thought the men knew each other and were joking. When she realized the shouting was more serious, she called 911.

Butler and Ahmad said the security guard warned the unidentified man to leave before police arrived.

The man ran to his car and left, they said, and Ahmad was stopped by the security guard from following to write down the man's vehicle tag number.

"They said words, didn't even make me feel like a human," Ahmad said.

Butler, a St. Petersburg resident, said she will no longer shop at Sam's Club.

Bedier is asking for Sam's Club to investigate and for disciplinary action if it is determined that any employee violated company policy. He wants company officials to preserve any surveillance tape that might exist and to clarify the company's nondiscrimination policy and how it relates to protecting customers.

Sam's Club is looking into the incident, corporate spokeswoman Susan Koehler said.

Bedier is also asking the Clearwater Police Department to investigate the actions of the officers who responded to the scene.

Ahmad said Cpl. Robert Fava refused to file a complaint or document the incident.

Police spokesman Wayne Shelor said Officer Kevin Klein was the reporting officer at the scene and Fava was the supervisor.

Shelor said witnesses told police that as Ahmad spoke, his claims became more exaggerated and elaborate.

"I am sure they were comfortable being an experienced officer and a supervisor with the way they handled the situation with the circumstances at hand," Shelor said.

If Ahmad is unhappy with the way police handled the situation, Shelor said, he should contact the department so it can address his concerns.

Koehler said Sam's Club has cooperated with police in the matter and would cooperate further if police revisited the incident.

If I moved to Germany, I would acclimate to the language, culture and dress to fit in, I would not go to their country and ask them to change for me. Coming here is not a right but a privilege. All terrorism ends with "Allah Akbar"!
by Sarah 02/25/07 06:37 PM
This is ridiculous. Why is "America" called a free country if you can't even speak the language you chose to speak?
by AIDA 02/23/07 07:55 PM
I am amazed from all these comments against going public when someone is a victim of a hate crime. My son, A KID, was a victim of hate in his own school (one of the best in the country!!) by his teacher. ARE YOU ALL NATIVE AMERICANS????? RED-SKIN????
by layla 02/19/07 09:05 AM
Amazing how ignorant people are. As I read the poorly spelled comments by "proud americans" keep up the good work! It is people like you that promote hate and wars.
by brenny 02/19/07 09:02 AM
unless you are native american-we are all immigrants.Stop being so self-righteous.hate is hate-it is a crime& a sin.It amazes me that people can forget the painful stories parents/grandparents shared about their early days in the US.ignorance!

No surprise here. Floridians are not immune to the Southern culture of bigotry. Good thing I escaped years ago.

Noel, PHYSICAL BATTERY in and of itself is a crime with penalties. (finger jabbing on head in this case) The law provides consequences for that alone. When hate language accompanies the BATTERY, the criminal penalties become enhanced by statute.
by Noel 02/02/07 09:54 AM
So citing your law, you would be just as upset if someone cussed out a neo-nazi or an Uhuru member correct? These people are entitled to their opinons as well as the man who cursed Derar Ahmad. Debate is good, it keeps truth alive.

2006 Florida Statues title XLVI Crimes, Chapter 775. 775.085 Evidencing prejudice while committing offense: reclassification I find the law abundantly clear. Keep your hands off of other people!

I am really glad this man is bringing this to our attention. The employees at Sam's should have done more. I hope God will protect all the Muslims and minorities. All I know is U.S had slaves not too long ago, its shameful what is in American blood.
by teresa 02/01/07 08:29 PM
How is sams club at fault. There trying to run a business they dont want to have to baby sit two grown men yelling at each other. If there was no blood or broken bones wheres the crime? Case closed!!!!!!!!!
by Noel 02/01/07 07:02 PM
Why didn't Ahmed Bedier go to Iraq and council Al-Zarqawi about Nick Bergs decapitation. Is that not an American-Islamic relations hiccup to say the least.
by Noel 02/01/07 06:47 PM
Nice job of censoring my most scathing accusations and evidence. Love the liberal media. Why does an arabic and or muslim always report on these kinds of things? They know best what to edit/censor?
by Jane 02/01/07 03:16 PM
I'm Jewish and of Russian descent. I solved my Klan problem via the ADL, FBI and a lawsuit. I feel safe when I'm around Muslims. I'm not sure I would feel that same kind of comfort around MS, John,Dan, Pat and Noel. Salaam and Shalom!
by Jane 02/01/07 02:49 PM
Mr. Ahmad said he had a finger jabbed at his head. The law says that's a battery: the standard doesn't require physical injury. Sam's, the police and the FBI were and are obligated to provide a fair and even playing field for everyone.
by mo'hd 02/01/07 12:47 PM
waste of tax dollars !!! yes you are right , but don't you think it is better to spend money to build a huge hospital for lunatics like that one who assault people just because they speak diffirent languge ?
by Noel 02/01/07 08:37 AM
Political correctness is thought control. Freedom of speech! This is the equivalent of not being able to cuss a Nazi in the US during WWII. Not all hate is bad. It is okay to hate bad things. Islam has done alot of bad things and many are angry.
by Noel 02/01/07 08:25 AM
"I disagree with you sir but, i will fight to the death for your right to say it' Voltaire
by Michelle 01/31/07 11:20 PM
It's easy for everyone to give their opinions and be against what derar ahmad went through, but have you imagined the opposite scene? What would've happened if the so called victim a descent palestinian cursed the american? PROBABLY JAIL,OR MORE!!!
by tony 01/31/07 11:16 PM
I'm surprised ahmad didn't kick the gay ass he was jerk and sham for American people we want you to know not all of us heat you gad bless keep your head up . peace
by Fuad 01/31/07 09:54 PM
I read some comments that say:"get over it" and such things. I would ask these people, get over what? Protect the bigoted low life? attack the victim? I think that these kind of incidents should be investigated and the perps punished. PEACE
by Jane 01/31/07 08:01 PM
The Southern Poverty Law Center (see Intelligence Report) notes Florida is home to 50 hate groups. Clearwater has the Creativity Movement , St. Petersburg has the National Vanguard (Neo-Nazis)Tampa has the Empire Knights of the KKK. More exist.
by PAT 01/31/07 07:41 PM
wow, if i was ahmad, i would make a political statement by leaving this horrible country. i,ll help him pack. oh and dont forget to take your wife and kid,s with you
by John 01/31/07 05:27 PM
"witnesses told police that as Ahmad spoke, his claims became more exaggerated" - par for the course with this guy. Sure, the other guy was a jerk, but Ahmad has a long history of antagonism himself. He's no saint and likely not innocent here.
by ahmed Re: by MS 01/31/07 04:46 PM
Waste of tax dollars it is now but invading a sovreign country and executing it's president and all the american and civilian iraqi lives wasted since the begining of the war that wasn't waste! come on ! does it have to get worst before intervention?
by Ahmed Fwd: by dan 01/31/07 04:41 PM
it's sad that you don't see hate crimes as crimes period and it's even sadder that you think it's normal after all it's only angry words, we have to wait till someone gets killed before we see it as a crime that ought to be investigated
by Ahmed 01/31/07 04:36 PM
what kind of life is that, when you cant even go shopping without being attacked by some hating lunatic? what kind of life is that when poeple who are supposed to protect and serve deny you the right of protection?
by Shaun 01/31/07 03:29 PM
Well Dan, hate crimes are violent crimes, hate speech or vandalism. There may not be laws in place to prevent hate crime, but that doesn't mean its not wrong. By saying that he should "grow up" you show that you obviously condone such things.
by MS 01/31/07 01:50 PM
Get over it Ahmed Bedier. I hope the FBI does not investigate your complaint, what a waste of tax dollars that would be. With the tensions in this country maybe Derah Ahmad should speak english when in public places.
by Dan 01/31/07 12:55 PM
"Ahmad said Cpl. Robert Fava refused to file a complaint or document the incident." What crime was commited" Get over it and grow up, your feelings got hurt...Angry words do not make this a crime? What makes this such a big story?
by dave 01/31/07 12:08 PM
not surprising given all the bigots and severly under-educated people that populate this city. Typically I'm amazed they still know how to breathe.
