TALLAHASSEE - Gov. Charlie Crist will unveil plans Wednesday set aside $20-million in his first budget for grants for embryonic stem-cell research. The governor will announce details of his stem-cell initiative at the University of South Florida, part of a week’s worth of budget and tax proposals. “I’m pro-life,” Crist said at a audience of editors and reporters at the annual Associated Press legislative planning session. “But I’m also pro-improving the quality of life for people.” Crist called his modest initiative “a start” and acknowledged the likelihood of resistance from social conservatives in the Legislature. He said his program will endorse the use of cord blood in adult stem cells and amniotic fluid in medical research, similar to several other states. Crist’s support for stem cell research was one area where he distanced himself from the socially conservative wing of the Republican Party. During the campaign last summer, he said he disagreed with President Bush’s decision to veto a congressional.

Mike, that's the Christian point exactly: Scripture says Jesus is the one to bear your ailments; and further says that embryos (the innocent) are not the ones to bear them! Please, please, understand this! God bless.

There is plenty of private funding. I am against using public funds that are never returned as benefits to the very people that supported the research. There is no need to destroy the embryos either. The Europeans have been able to meet both views

I strongly beleive that stem cell research is the medicine of the future. Its hard to stop abortion, since some people view it as a right, so as long as there is abortion, we can put the stem cells to good use.

You cannot be "Pro-Life" and support embryonic stem cell research! They are mutually exclusive positions. The same money could be spent for research on umbilical cord blood cells or amniotic fluid cells, neither of which destroys life.

It is absolutely incomprehensible to me how anyone can sanction destroying life in this manner. If you accept this, how do you suppress the sanctioning of taking any other level of human life for the benefit of the "common good?" Crist is barbaric.

Charlie Crist has done more for Florida in the first than Jeb did in his entire reign.Jeb left an insurance mess behind and it looks like George is going to leave a mess called Iraq for the next administration, typical of the Bush brothers

When Gov. Crist says he is pro-life.....depends on whose life he is talking about at the time he is speaking. He is very inconsistant in how he applies his "beliefs" to governmental policies that affect all the people of this state.
