Gulf point guard Sam Ovind skipped Homecoming and even stood up what she described as an "understanding" date to attend a basketball showcase in Atlanta last fall.
It paid off Wednesday afternoon when Ovind signed on to attend Warner Southern next season and play college ball.
"Yeah, I think it was pretty well worth it," Ovind said.
Worth it? Consider: Until that Atlanta trip, Ovind was planning to send tapes to small colleges in Colorado, where her grandparents live, and North Dakota, where she was born and has family.
One missed dance later, she gets to stay in sunny Florida and play close to home.
"I'm excited and definitely looking forward to playing basketball in college," said Ovind, who led Pasco County in assists this season with 6.6 a game while adding 10 points a contest.
