GAINESVILLE - Sophomore linebacker Jon Demps' career at Florida may be over. Demps reportedly has been dismissed from the team, but his father said Wednesday that his son's status is uncertain and most likely will be settled by next week. Coach Urban Meyer is recruiting and could not be reached for comment.
According to Alachua County court records, Demps has been cited three times since August 2005 for driving with a suspended license. One case was dropped, and in another Demps was granted the option of correcting the issue before going to trial. The third criminal traffic case is scheduled for a pretrial conference on Feb. 26.
Demps, who was highly recruited out of Pensacola Washington, played in four games as a freshman in 2005 then suffered a season-ending torn ACL. He injured the same knee in August during fall drills and did not play.
Florida officials said Demps is enrolled and attending classes. NCAA rules require players to be in good academic standing to transfer.
