Woman's tragic tale just a tale after all
A woman told her fellow choir members she was dying of cancer, starting 11 months of lies.

HUDSON - Beneath a stained-glass mural of the resurrection, the choir of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church gathered Friday to mourn a young member's death. The people had braced for Alison Matera's passing since they learned of her cancer. They sat in wooden pews before a pedestal of polished white stone. Among them was a stranger who looked strangely familiar. She said she was Matera's sister. But she looked and sounded exactly like Matera. And the people wondered. Was it all a trick? According to an incident report from the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, this is what happened: Matera told them about the cancer last February, after two years in the choir. They were some of her closest friends, and she gave them frequent updates on her treatment. Near the end of last year, at the age of 27, she said she was giving up and entering hospice care. Choir members started getting calls from a hospice nurse with updates on Matera's condition. Several of them noticed the same thing: The nurse's voice sounded just like Matera's. Jan. 18, the same nurse called choir director Timothy Paquin and told him Matera had died at 7:04 p.m. He spread the news and planned the memorial. Soon after, Paquin got a call from a woman saying she was Matera's sister. She said Matera's body would be shipped north to her family. She, too, sounded just like Matera. Paquin called the hospice. He called local funeral homes. No one had a record of Alison Matera. But the wheels were in motion, and the memorial went on. Then the so-called sister appeared, and the suspicion grew, and by the end of the service the people were convinced it had been a charade. It's unclear whether anyone confronted her, because no one from the choir agreed to be interviewed for this story. Matera also declined to comment, as did the stepsister she might have impersonated. After the service, a choir member called the Sheriff's Office and asked for help. A deputy visited Matera's apartment in New Port Richey that night. She was there. According to the report, she confessed to faking her sickness and death. Matera was not arrested. According to sheriff's spokesman Doug Tobin, she did not commit a crime. So why did she do it? She told the deputy she has attachment problems rooted in childhood trauma. Any time someone gets close, she feels the need to separate. After she gained several close friends in the choir, she said she had cancer to drive them away. But it brought them closer. She said the fake death - the heartbreaking conclusion of an 11-month lie - was her best attempt at sparing everyone's feelings. Many times I have felt the heavyhanded control of a church. They grab you by your wounds and your emotions and make you feel condemned for leaving. Some of their "compassion" is a secret attempt to manipulate and control you.

Wow what a creative idea.. Maybe I'll try something like that someday. You people are really quick to judge saying that she's crazy and should go to jail. I don't think she did anything wrong, all she did was lie.. and in this case, it's not a crime.

Am I the only one who is sick and tired of people using their past or some emotional disease as an excuse when they get caught doing something shady? For someone who needed to "separate", she sure made an effort to keep in touch! No sympathy here.

She definitely needs help! Punishment would not do as it will hurt her further. Because of her childhood encounter and sickness, she needs our prayers and counselling. Don't judge but encouragement and grace would make her a wonderful witness.

I think Matera has a mental problem. lying to people is wrong but to do it in a church? she needs to be commited and if she has a problem getting close to people than why did she join the choir? she needs medication and a shrink to get help.

The normal reaction toward Ms.Matera's prank would be anger. But, once that emotion subsides someone should reach out to her,not with chastisment but with concern.Yes,it's true her "friends" have tried, but now it's time for the extra mile. W.W.J.D.?

The poor woman definitely needs help, but so do many of the commenters - some of you just won't be satisfied until every behavior is either required or outlawed. It's a good thing your lives are in perfect shape, giving you time to try to run others.

What would Jesus have said to her? "Your sins are forgiven. Be healed." And He would have loved her and given her the help she needs. When we condemn someone who obviously need help, we are not being the disciples that He wants us to be.

This is almost exectly the story told in the book/movie The Night Listener by Armistead Maupin. He had a similar experience. Fascinating human behavior and another example of the need to heal past trauma.

Instead of locking away mentally ill people like was done in the dark ages we need to try and fund research to find out more about what is going on and create more treatment options.Watch the news - mental illness is not going to go away!

Clearly this woman had Bipolar Disorder. It's interesting, by reading a lot of these comments, how ignorant this society is on mental illness. Very sad.

Why is it that 'these' crazies are so creative and calculating? Yet, don't arrest them, don't press charges, don't say anything. We have a crazy like her in my neighborhood going around leaving 'messages' to let people know she's been here today.

After reading this story I was taken back to a time 4 years ago when we had a secretary lie about having cancer. She faked her son's death, instead of her own. She committed suicide once everyone found her out...very sad. She had Bipolar Disorder.

I'm going to try really hard to spell every word correctly. This lady needs attention, love, compassion and forgiveness. It's so easy to judge someone for being attention seeking, when it is so easy to give them just that. Are we selfless enough?

Honesty is the best policy. Her attempt to spare her friends feelings backfired because they were probably more hurt by her horrible actions then if she was just honest with them. People can understand childhood trauma, not a faked death!!!

It should be against the law to fake one's own death. Especially when it costs family or community to mourn.

My question is to the church, why would they hold a memorial service or funeral without checking for a decease member? What will they do the next time she cries WOLF...
