With just three weeks of the new spring season under its belt, Countryside is right where it left off in the fall, holding on to first and second place with two squads.

The Cougars No. 1 team finished the fall Pinellas County High School League as champs, and with Travis Vorbeck, Matt Florio, Jared Solomon and Jon Brady all back, they have a commanding 13-point lead over the Cougars No.4 team, which is led by Chris Holcomb, Joe Willoughby and Adam DiCristo. Brady led the boys last week with a game of 256 and series of 676. Both squads took all available 18 points last Wednesday.

Ashly Galante stole the whole show last week with a 259 game and has cracked the 700 series mark with a 714 for her Tarpon Springs No. 2 team. Bowling well for the Spongers is Kristi Bowen, whose numbers have helped the Tarpon No.1 team slide into fourth behind Palm Harbor University's No. 1 team.

PHU, led by Aaron Morris, Mike Coneby and Blake Rasmussen, is averaging 170. The Hurricanes' No. 3 team features Chris Grube and sisters Brittany and Stephanie Scanlon. Grube is averaging 217. Stephanie rolled a 258/612 last week. East Lake No. 1, with Joe May, Allie Edgar and Louis Sadowski files in at fifth. May has been stellar this season with an all-out league high of a 260 game and 718 series, while averaing 213. Galante is averaging 220.

Bowling is every Wednesday at 3:30. Next week the youths will be at AMF Clearwater and Dunedin Lanes the following week. Spectators and supporters are encouraged to attend.

PBA: Last week Jason Couch captured his 15th career Denny's PBA Tour title and won back-to-back titles for the first time, knocking off Billy Oatman 236-228 in the finals of the Motel 6 Classic at Strike Zone at Sunset Station. Couch ended the storybook run of Oatman, who was looking to join George Branham III as the only African-Americans to win tour titles.

Oatman was fired up but poised in advancing to the title match with a 207-181 win over Brad Angelo. The 41-year-old rookie then ran into the hottest bowler on tour. Over the two-week holiday break, according to PBA.com, Couch, then 27th in the PBA World Point Rankings, told his wife, Kim, he was going to change his attitude. Couch quickly parlayed a new positive attitude into four top-six finishes, three TV appearances and two titles in the past four weeks, in addition to the No. 1 spot in the point rankings.

The tour returns to El Paso, Texas, for the first time since the 2004 season for the Sun City Classic this weekend. The live ESPN finals are Sunday at 2 p.m.

UPCOMING: The next National Amateur Bowlers Inc. tournament is Feb. 11 at AMF Lakeland with squad times of 1 and 2:30 p.m. Call (863) 667-4779.

- A few official marks on the USBC schedule: March 30, USBC Coaching Bronze Certification Conference, Orlando; April 12, NCAA Women's National Collegiate Bowling Championships, Orlando; April 13, USBC Coaching Silver Certification Conference, Orlando; Aug 11, Tournament of the Americas, Sunrise.

CHATTER: Seminole's Ron Demillion featured a 279 on his way to the week's high series score of 802 for all houses. Greg Ickes (300/790) was perfect, and Robin Hood (299/727) came close. At Liberty, Mariann Russo (256/728) rolled the leading women's score alongside good bowling from Lisa Bereczki (269/719), Don MacDonald (300/752), Marty Murphy (279/782), Keith Glasgow (279/783) and youth Kimberly Lady, who pasted a 202/533. In Tarpon, Becky Going (188/504) and Joe Reindeau (259-247/710) had good nights.
