10th annual touch-a-truck to be held today

Two helicopters, a police dog demonstration, sheriff's vehicles, big trucks and more will be featured at Safety Harbor's 10th annual free Touch-A-Truck celebration for families from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the city park on Seventh Street S. The Clearwater Threshers' new mascot, Phinley, will be on hand to welcome visitors and the city's newest playground, Boundless Playground, will open during the event. The playground is accessible to children with special needs. Lunch and snacks will be available. Parking is on Seventh Avenue S and at the community center across the street from the park.

Down's syndrome group will meet

Caregivers of Down's Syndrome adults will meet from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Clearwater East Library, 2251 Drew St. The program will focus on hearing impairments of persons with Down's Syndrome. Call Virginia Ruf at 797-0288.

Boating program to begin Feb. 28

Dunedin Coast Guard Flotilla 11-10 will begin its next safe boating and seamanship program on Feb. 28. The program meets for nine sessions from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays until March 28. The program, which is held on the second floor of the Dunedin Marina Harbormaster building, 51 Main St., covers everything from tying knots to navigation. The $40 cost covers all materials. Most insurance companies offer boaters discounts to graduates of this course. For information and reservations, call 734-0215, 735-0737 or 736-1191. The flotilla's next program will begin on April 18.

Army pilot to speak at country club

Army Maj. Kathi McDiffett, an active duty helicopter pilot stationed at the St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport, will be the guest speaker at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at the Belleair Country Club. The program is sponsored by the Clearwater chapter of the Military Order of World Wars. Prospective members are welcome. Call 786-5578.

Scuba certification course being held

Largo Recreation is offering scuba certification course starting Monday. The program combines classroom instruction, pool work and a boat dive. Participants must have a mask, snorkel, weight belt, underwater watch and booties. Wet suit, regulator, tank and buoyancy compensator will be provided by the instructor. Classes will meet from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday and Wednesday evening through Feb. 25 at Sunshine Scuba. Cost is $250 a person. Call 585-0938.
