Superintendent search is going a week faster

A citizens committee advising the School Board on candidates to succeed retiring superintendent Wendy Tellone has finished its work a week early, prompting the board to accelerate its own schedule. The committee ranked resumes and voted Wednesday on six candidates to recommend to the board: John D. Sico Jr., superintendent, Hampton, N.J.; David M. Piccolo, area superintendent, Brevard County; John F. O'Sullivan Jr., superintendent, Minnesota; Harry J. La Cava, area superintendent, Broward County; Jay B. Kosner, professional development specialist for schools, Chicago; and Lorenda Tiscornia, high school principal, Duval County. As a result, the School Board will discuss the search process a week early, at a 1 p.m. workshop Tuesday. Board members are free to consider other candidates to interview in March. And consultant Wayne Blanton, executive director of the Florida School Boards Association, will submit his own list of recommendations after checking references and doing some interviews. "I encouraged them to do background checks just like I do," Blanton said, referring to the citizens committee. But the committee limited its work to reviewing applications and did not interview candidates or their references, chairman Roger Landers said. "We felt that was beyond our responsibility," he said.

Overnight storms left little damage

The storms that battered central Florida early Friday morning may have passed through Hernando County, but they did little damage here. Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative reported no more than 200 customers without power at any time during the night and all those outages were restored within a few hours. Progress Energy Florida said none of its customers in Hernando lost power.
