What do you pride yourself on as an athlete?
In basketball during a tie game with 20 seconds left I like to be the one guarding the point guard. I want to put pressure on him and make him turn the ball over.
What would you consider the highlight of your athletic career?
My touchdown in the Gaither game. We were down 24-0. We put Develin (Robinson) in motion. It was just me and the safety. I ran straight to the pile on, Joe (Weatherford) threw it up, and I beat the safety. (Land O'Lakes won 28-24.)
Since we're on the topic of sports, what is your favorite sport?
I'd have to say soccer.
I used to play soccer, but I was playing four sports at a time (football, basketball, soccer, track). I played center forward. I was faster than everyone. I could control the ball pretty good. At basketball practice, I dribble the ball with my feet and shoot it with my head.
A couple of schools are interested in you for football and basketball. Where are you in the recruiting process?
I went to Wayne State (Neb.) and they offered me. The only thing I didn't like about it was there was snow and it was kind of cold. I'm supposed to go to Fort Valley State (Ga.) this weekend.
You didn't like the snow?
I liked it, but it was cold. It got to - 4.
Did it feel like - 4 or was it - 4?
Oh, it got to - 4.
When you consider sports in general, do you have a favorite athlete?
(Phoenix Suns guard) Steve Nash. He's just a great floor general. I like the way he passes the ball. He stepped up his game this year.
Let's say your athletic career tops out in college and you don't become one of SportsCenter's nightly staples, what do you want to do with your life?
Definitely something in sports. Either being a coach or something with sports marketing.
What about school? What's your favorite subject?
I like history. I just like learning about the past.
Does anything specific grab your attention?
The Holocaust. I can't see how one person can get all those people and do something that horrible to them.
All right, let's lighten the mood a bit. What has been your most embarrassing moment in high school?
It was this year. We were shooting around in the gym before the Pasco game. I shot a fade away, landed on both feet, tripped and fell. People were sitting in the stands laughing.
How about dating? Do you have some sort of dream date?
Alicia Keys. That's always been my dream date.
How about your biggest role model?
My father (Patrick Smith), no question. No matter what he always sticks behind me.
Let's finish with an awkward one. If you could play for any other school, which school would you play for and why?
I would play for Hudson. (The football team has) a lot of young kids that play hard every play. They don't give up and they don't fight with each other like some of the other schools. I think Hudson will be okay in a couple of years.
