Whom does one notify to put a fraud alert on one's credit reports to prevent identity theft?

The Federal Trade Commission Web site is a good resource on identity theft. It defines a fraud alert and gives contact phone numbers and addresses for the consumer reporting companies, the firms you need to contact. Go to www.ftc.gov and click on the link "Avoid ID Theft."
