After a weekend of mobilizing aid and comforting tornado victims in Central Florida, Gov. Charlie Crist watched the Super Bowl on Sunday with about a dozen Tallahassee firefighters down the street from the Governor's Mansion. "We're neighbors, you know," Crist said as he settled into an easy chair at Station 3. Wearing blue jeans and a bright red Tampa Bay Buccaneers sweat shirt, Crist watched the first quarter and part of the second, sipping a Coke and nibbling on trail mix. "I'm a Dungy guy," Crist said. "I've got to pull for Tony Dungy. You know, he's a Floridian. He still has a home in Tampa Bay." Late in the first quarter, Crist lost some of his pals when an alarm signaled a fire in eastern Leon County.
Even without finding the check, woman would know how tornado victims felt
The tornadoes that tore through Central Florida last week killed Mike and Melinda Suss and destroyed their home. It also blew one of their canceled checks more than 30 miles from Lake Mack almost to the Halifax River and into the hands of Melanie Patey of Port Orange, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Patey, right, survived her own brush with a twister that destroyed her apartment in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1993. "It's just bizarre," Patey said Sunday, hours after her husband found the check in their garden and they realized it came from storm victims in Lake County. "This just freaks me out."
She doesn't have to pass Go to get paid
A 90-year-old Hillsborough County woman has landed on Boardwalk with a $1-million prize in the Florida Lottery's new Million Dollar Monopoly game. Myrna Fonda bought two scratchoff tickets for $20 apiece at a Seffner Winn-Dixie. One was a dud. The other could change her life. The $1-million version of the Monopoly series came out two weeks ago and includes six top prizes, including Fonda's. Fonda told lottery officials she plans to use some of the money to pay off her mortgage and a few bills. The odds of snagging a top prize in Million Dollar Monopoly are 1 in 4.2-million.
