Make me a . . . Mandarin Cosmopolitan

The cosmopolitan is of decidedly modern vintage. One of the first girly-sweet '80s twists on a martini, it sweetens vodka with an orange liqueur and dilutes it all with lime juice and another favorite of the decade, cranberry juice.

Some cocktail historians say it was born in Miami's South Beach 15 years before the Sex and the City women ordered them up for an entire generation.

We got ours from Mangroves Grill in South Tampa, a popular shrine to the HBO show for Carrie wanna-bes and Messrs. Big.

TWIST: Although the original Cosmo started with a lemon-flavored vodka, Mangroves ups the ante with Mandarin Blossom vodka from Hangar One, the artisan vodka from California. Mandarin is infused with a strong tart edge of citrus.

TIPS: Squeeze the lime juice fresh and use the good booze.

Mix it up

Mandarin Cosmopolitan

- 1 ounce Mandarin Blossom vodka

- 1/2 ounce triple sec or other orange liqueur

- 1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice

- Splash of cranberry juice

Pour all ingredients in shaker with ice. Shake, strain into chilled martini glass and garnish with orange pinwheel slice.
