Kids will hop, skip and jump to raise funds to prevent heart disease.

WESLEY CHAPEL - Double Dutch anyone?

On Mondays and Tuesdays at 3:45 p.m., it's meeting time for kids in the newly formed Jump Rope Club at Seven Oaks Elementary. For the past few weeks these kids have been getting some extracurricular exercise so they can help kick off a special fundraising event at their school.

Students have been learning about the importance of keeping fit to help prevent strokes and heart disease while mastering jump roping skills that go beyond those taught in regular physical education classes, said physical education teacher and event sponsor Taryn Neal.

Seven Oaks Elementary is one of many schools throughout the county taking part in the Jump Rope for Heart program, which spreads awareness while raising funds for the American Heart Association.

On Valentine's Day, members of the after-school club will perform at the opening event before other students have a chance to do their part and jump for the cause.

Ten ways to encourage healthy habits

1. Be a positive role model.

2. Get the whole family active. Take walks, ride bikes, go swimming or garden.

3. Limit TV, video game and computer time.

4. Encourage physical activities that children really enjoy. 5. Be supportive. Focus on the positive instead of the negative.

6. Set specific goals and limits, such as one hour of physical activity a day.

7. Don't reward kids with food.

8. Make dinnertime a family time.

9. Make a game of reading food labels.

10. Stay involved. Be an advocate for healthier children.
