  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

This plate needs to stay off the table

Here comes the push for a motorist's right to have an official Confederate auto tag on his bumper.

What could be the most divisive state-sanctioned license plate yet would include the Confederate battle flag - to some a symbol of slavery and racism.

But the Florida division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans insists the idea is Southern pride and preservation. "A purely historical tag," says John Adams, whose group has already collected the signatures and fees to jump-start the cause.

No one's arguing against history, particularly the kind we don't want to repeat. Museums, libraries and textbooks are excellent places for recording how we got here and what it cost us.

But a Confederate license plate issued by the government? One that will surely appeal to some whose interest in that flag is, well, less than scholarly?

Our state shouldn't be in the business of offering up contentious tags - and we're not talking Gators vs. Seminoles here.

Specialty plates were all about saving the panthers and cheering the Bucs until Florida's "Choose Life" tag came out. That, of course, sparked the current call for a prochoice tag. Like we don't have enough reasons to get riled behind the wheel already.

No one says you can't use your car as your canvas for free speech, with bumper stickers bragging on your honor student, dissing your president or, yes, touting your heritage.

But for a lot of us, a Confederate tag officially issued by the state would be one powerful polarizing symbol.

As state Sen. Arthenia Joyner told the Times, "It's the message we send to the nation that racism is alive and well in Florida."

Says Adams: "Obviously there's probably some controversy that makes some folks gun-shy" about lending legislative support. But he's confident the tag will come to pass. More than a half-dozen states have similar tags already.

Nothing wrong with knowing our history - we just have to remember to learn from it.

Free speech, Part II: The woman who asked Charlie Crist the Question has resigned from the club where it happened.

Lee Drury De Cesare, 74, is an acid-tongued former columnist and current blogger who delights in the filleting of public figures. Recently she quit Tampa's Tiger Bay Club, where persons-of-the-moment go to get grilled.

At one meeting, De Cesare famously asked the future governor about a rumor that he was gay. ("I'm not," he answered.)

Recently the club's board voted to ask De Cesare not to send scorching followup e-mails to speakers after they had appeared. (Some speakers said they didn't want to come back.)

Predictably, De Cesare, who has been known to threaten to beat a politician with a broom if he didn't make good on political promises, resigned. (In true De Cesare fashion, she briefly reconsidered so she could have a crack at City Council candidates at Tiger Bay Friday. But it looks like the club and one of its most vocal members have parted ways.)

"It's supposed to be a political club," she said. "It's not a garden party." Though to some candidates this week, it might feel a little more like one.

I will reply to a few key posts. Florida should indeed have a specialty plate honoring the Confederate flags and those who fought for it! So Stephen Mallory married a Hispanic woman. What does it prove? Hispanics can be White, Black, or Mulatto!

I think Polititions who dont make good on their promises should be beat with more than a broom, Maybe a baseball bat. There is a very good reason why the citizens of the "Great Old" USA are not too proud of the "New Revised" USA.

I dont see the connection between the Historical Confederate Battle Flag and racism. I would like for someone who does to explain it to me. Maybe I should be upset about it too. Thanks

Can we ban and remove the american flag? It is a hurtful symbol of the holocost carried out against the Native Americans.

Whenever the State starts deciding that one group's heritage should not be celebrated, that is bigotry. When the animal rights folks decide to ban fishing or hunting tags, sooner or later the bigotry will come knocking at your door.

What happened to the Native Americans is a travesty of unimaginable proportion-1000 x's worse than the 1940's holocost-this nation was founded on blood of your people-you are the rightful owners from Alaska to Argentina-you deserve respect & apology

Why are we always trying to re-write history? Are we ashamed of our past and where we came from? I'm an Indian - you know - "Native American" - an original and I don't get a plate and nobody wants to compensate us for what was done to all the Indians

Florida was the 3rd State to secede and join the Confederate states of America. That ought to tell you something. Hon.Stephen Russell Mallory, United States Senator from Florida, and later Secretary of the Confederate Navy. Married a Hispanic Lady.

I find that some persons ignore the fact that there were more slave states in the union than in the south. Rhode Island was the slave trading capital, not Florida. Check facts, not the fiction called history books. remember the winner writes the book

Every person has someone to hate - to ponit the finger and say "you are responsable for all my problems - I want vengance" - how about a radical idea that's universal - "Forgiveness will set you free..."
by Mark 02/08/07 01:30 AM
The plate is a good idea. It says "Sons of Confederate Veterans". The flag is small. It's very honorable.
by Drew 02/08/07 01:12 AM
Okay, recently I saw a Martin Luther King plate that I believe said "Live The Dream" on it - how about a Jefferson Davis plate that says "Remember The Dream" ?? Fair is fair people !!!!!!
by DREW 02/08/07 12:56 AM
Great idea !! Every other cause and dilema known to man are placed on plates in this state, and some of them are already offensive to some people. The Confederate flag is a symbol of the South - nothing more. How about a plate with Jefferson Davis on

The Civil War is by far the greatest legend of American folklore. Without Confederate flags, America would not look like America anymore. To me, these flags are fun things and symbols of peace, tolerance, and national unity.
by Mike 02/07/07 07:46 PM
Your lack of historical understanding is almost amusing so I will curtail a history lesson. If our plate passes difficult test your life will go on without any major changes and mine the same. But I will proudly display my Confederate plate 24-7
by john 02/07/07 04:42 PM
it is obvious that ted has not learned his history, nor his spelling.
by John 02/07/07 12:38 PM
Allow all specialty plates or allow none. Personally, I find manatees and panthers highly offensive but I can't deny the constitutional right of their supporters to a license plate.
by ted 02/07/07 11:12 AM
while we r at it, hows bout nazi, imperial german and imperial japanese flags, too. after all, those nations made war on the u.s.a., too. lets not forget, whatever the apologists whine, the war was about the "right" to own another person. Period!
by Kay 02/07/07 10:24 AM
Chis, what is racist about it? The statement that we should learn from our history? If a picture of a historical flag is racist in your mind, don't put that on me. Perhaps we should not consider this flag AND get rid of the prolife one's as well.
by Ed 02/07/07 09:57 AM
As far as I know, America is the land of freedom - you can not supress people's right to free speech & expression of the past - as long as you aren't a threat to yourself or anyone else - strange but true - the melting pot shouldn't exclude anyone !
by Dean 02/07/07 09:52 AM
As a Native American, I want a specialty tag that depicts George Armstrong Custer's scalp! And text that says, Native Americans needed stronger immigration laws. But just to remember my heritage--not to upset white people.
by Mike 02/07/07 08:48 AM
Free speech only applies if Sue approves. I hope the SCV sells 100,000 license plates for no other reason than to get the ire of anti-free speech & anti-equality people like dear Sue.
by Chis 02/07/07 06:23 AM
That is the most racist and narrow minded article I have ever read. It reminds me of the Geico commercials. I, as an American with pride of how our country became so great, am embarrassed of citizens with your attitude.
