INVERNESS - Withlacoochee Technical Institute offers free preparatory classes for adults interested in taking and passing the General Educational Development test, commonly called the GED. The glitch is the $50 price tag. To encourage interested adults to take classes before the test, the school will now reimburse the $50 test fee to students who successfully pass the test after attending preparatory classes. There are four opportunities to prepare for the GED test. Day classes are offered from 7:15 to 10:15 a.m. or 11:10 to 2:10 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday in Room 706 at WTI or 9 a.m. to noon three days a week call 795-7887 for specific days at Promise Village in Crystal River. Night classes are available at three times and locations: from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday in Room 706 at WTI; 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday in Room 503 at Crystal River High School; from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Homosassa. Students interested in online preparation can call instructor Al Mitchell at 726-2430, ext. 278, or e-mail him at wtiged@tmpabay.rr.com. A GED Fast-Track is available for higher-level students. It consists of the two-hour Test of Adult Basic Education, or TABE, and 10 hours of specified instruction in areas of need as identified by the instructor through the TABE and a practice GED test. Students successfully completing the GED receive a Florida high school diploma. Mitchell indicated that the reimbursement of the $50 test fee has made a difference. It is, he said, "the best thing that's happened to this program in a long time. My enrollment has tripled this month."
