Relay for life has students making plans

Springstead High School will host the American Cancer Society Relay for Life April 20-21, and schools are planning their strategies. The Beta Club at Nature Coast Technical is planning its team theme, but details are hush-hush. Betas at Nature Coast also had a bake sale and a shoe box drive to benefit Dawn Center and Jericho Road. Submarine Club prepares for action The Hernando County Submarine Club, based at Springstead High, is inviting high school students and adults to participate in a most excellent adventure. They're building a human-powered sub for a national competition race in June. Designers, builders, divers, support crew and sponsors are needed. Watch for more details about the sub, Sublime, in Top of the Class later this month. Practice sessions include an exhibition race at Weeki Wachee in early March with teams from Virginia Tech and Florida Atlantic University. Contact Mr. Knowlton or Mr. Barton in the construction technology room in the 300 hall at Springstead. Cattlemen's group offers scholarship High school seniors or college students with a 2.0 GPA and a focus in agricultural studies can apply for a $1,000 annual scholarship from the Hernando Cattlemen's Association. Many recreation events available The Hernando County Recreation Department has low- and no-cost classes and activities for all ages at 11 locations. Call 754-4031 for details. Spring Hill Elementary Spring Hill Elementary School's Advisory Council meets at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the media center. Pine Grove Elementary Pine Grove Elementary and other schools will participate in the Jump Rope for Heart event through Feb. 23 during physical education time. Contact the school to get more information. Pine Grove's SAC and Title I meeting is at 3:45 p.m. Feb. 15. Fox Chapel Middle School Fox Chapel Middle School's Title I and School Advisory Council meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday.
