Rays seem ready to dump Devil
A name tweak is among changes considered for 2008.
By MARC TOPKIN
Published February 8, 2007
TAMPA - When the Devil Rays unveil new logos, colors and uniforms for the 2008 season, they likely still will be known by their old name.
Or at least their old last name.
After considering a complete change of identity to mark the end of their first decade, team officials apparently will instead drop the Devil and keep the Rays.
"We haven't made a final decision, but we are leaning toward the direction of a change in uniform, a change of colors, a change in logo and perhaps a slight modification of the name," team president Matt Silverman said. "But it's unlikely we will have a dramatic change in the name."
That decision represents something of a compromise, allowing the team to maintain what brand identity it has and connections, such as with the new rays tank while exorcising the devilish connotation that some find objectionable.
"We've integrated fan sentiments, results from focus groups and surveys into this," Silverman said.
The new color scheme, expected to be heavy on blue, perhaps with yellow accompaniments, isn't likely to be unveiled until after this season.
Earlier Wednesday, Silverman told the sold-out crowd of 400 at the Tampa Chamber of Commerce luncheon that principal owner Stuart Sternberg is very much committed to winning but they will stick to a plan that requires time and patience for young players to mature. As a result, they made only a few offseason acquisitions and have a projected major-league low opening-day payroll of $24-million.
"We lost 101 games last season and that is not acceptable," Silverman said. "We are all anxious to have a winning team. ... No one wants to succeed more than Stuart Sternberg. Unfortunately, there really isn't a quick fix for major-league baseball teams. ...
"We need to have patience to make the right decisions, to make the right investments that are going to benefit this organization and this community for years to come."
Also:
- Manager Joe Maddon seemed to answer one of the biggest questions of spring training by saying new Japanese infielder Akinori Iwamura will "most likely" play third base.
There had been talk of moving Iwamura to second, which would have displaced Jorge Cantu. With Iwamura at third, Ty Wigginton seems likely to play first and B.J. Upton will have to compete for a utility job. Camp opens Feb. 17.
- The Rays released a TV schedule that features a franchise-most 146 games - 79 on Fox Sports Net cable, 67 over-the-air on ION Television (formerly Pax). Joe Magrane and Dewayne Staats return in the booth, with Todd Kalas again part of the crew.
As part of their regionalization efforts, the Rays increased the games available on over-the-air TV in Orlando from 25 to 67.
- New special adviser Fred McGriff was the most popular attraction at the Hyatt Regency luncheon, and the retired slugger made a pitch to fans in his Tampa hometown. "I get tired of driving around town and seeing 'Go Yankees,' " McGriff said. "We've got to change that."
- Iwamura will make his first public appearance as a Ray on today's St. Petersburg caravan, with stops including the 11:30 a.m. St. Petersburg/Cleawater chamber luncheon at Tropicana Field and a 6 p.m. autograph session at BayWalk.
Around the majors
DODGERS: Right-hander Joe Mays agreed to a minor-league contract and will attend spring training as a nonroster invitee. He is 48-70 with a 5.05 ERA in 206 games, 156 as a starter.
RANGERS: Left-hander Bruce Chen agreed to a minor-league contract and will compete for the starting rotation. In nine seasons with eight teams he is 35-37 with a 4.60 ERA.
YANKEES: Left-hander Kei Igawa, expected to be in the starting rotation, threw on flat ground at the minor-league complex in Tampa. He is scheduled to throw off a mound on Monday. "He looks like he is going to be a real good pitcher," Yankees vice president Billy Connors said.

Why new uniforms. I like it the way it is right now. I the name Devil Rays isa way to long. They really need to change this. I really hope that the new uniforms is a little boost for the Rays to make a run this year.

While reading this article on the name change ,the connotation(devil). It should be changed to The Tampa Bay Sting Rays. This young-up and coming team will definitely have a sting next year. The logo should be that of a sting ray,it's a peaceful animal.

i know why they're changing to heavy on the blue. the electric blue seats you can always see on Tv because they're empty. they need to work that color into their color scheme.

Whatever they do, don't take the 'D' out of the D-Rays. Devil makes us sound intimidating (even tho we aren't). It's maverick. Keep it D-Rays.
And blue and yellow could be cool, but I really hope we're still the Devil Rays in the end.

The current uniforms and colors are perfect1 100 percent better than the original uniforms. Why change them? Using the word Devil was always a dumb idea. Makes the name too long and clunky. What is wrong with Stingrays or just Rays?

Devil. The name should never have been used. Would you call a sports team God? It's to bad that people with money and power don't always have a good brain.

Hey Stuart, are you reading this? I guess your little focus groups missed the real fans who actually buy tickets and merchandise. Sounds to me like it's clear you should leave the name and uniforms alone. Everyone sees thru your merchandising scheme.

Do not drop Devil from the name. "Tampa Bay Rays" sounds too plain. If they insist on taking "Devil" out, the name should be more than just "Rays." As for those who are offended by the current name, nobody seems to mind the New Jersey Devils or Duke.

Look at the unis that Houston had in the 70's......can't get much worse than that.......unless they opt for Blue with Yellow Polka-Dots.......now there is an idea.....living in Orlando for the past 25 years....I still rooted for the Red Sox.......why

With the team they are fielding, a name change is not enough. I suggest the witness protection program. Last winter I predicted 100 losses. They lost 101. This year I'm predicting 90 loss, yet another last place finish, and a managerial firing.

"I don't miss rooting for the Tampa Bay Loser Rays, who are of course,in St.Pete."
They are called Tampa Bay because they represent the Tampa Bay area. You guys had no problems supporting the Bucs for 20 plus years when they sucked. Why not the Rays

The logo and the colors are fine, why change them. Are they kidding with yellow? This is the big leagues, isn't it? The green, purple look is very cool. And, my $200 jacket doesn't need to be replaced. As for the name, I prefer the Ramons.

I bet once "Devil" is out of the name, Jesus will love us and give us a winning team. Otherwise forget it...

I may have to lose interest in baseball all together now. I'm so sick of the "politically correct" crap. I love the green color. Too many teams change their colors. It's gotta be so folks spend more money. Baseball has lost it's old time appeal.

Ok dropping the Devil from the name but lets leave unis as they are. The Rays current unis are the result of a slow evolution from the horrible unis they started with. The current unis are classy. If changed, i hope its not a radical change.

Yellow means caution. Don't be cautious be aggressive. Green is fine. Remember it's not the suit that makes the man, it's the man that makes the suit. Maybe the best outfield around but the infield and pitching will not hold up.

Fine. Drop "Devil". Not that big a deal but leave the colors alone. I love the green. It's so much more unique and too many teams have blue. Yellow, just not a good idea. Is this so I have to buy more hats and jerseys????

Changing the name or the colors does is a smokescreen for not changing the product on the field. The hitting and fielding is adequate and improving .Get four pitchers that are worth 5 million a year and lets break .500, for the first time . Stuart !

So we'll remove the icing from a moldy cake and put on new icing with new colors. It's still a moldy cake. Stop trading away players who develop, then tell us things will get better when the minor leaguers develop. It doesn't sell any more.

There is one word that goes with championship and that is accountability. Holding player accountable for their actions is what got the Bucs and Lightning their championships. Madden hold your players accountable for their actions.

Remember, the payroll is low only because the players are young. Once the good young players become arbitration eligible, the same roster will cost $60 million. Delmon Young, Scott Kazmir, James Shields, etc. will all command large salaries.
