WASHINGTON

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi found herself under fire Wednesday over her request for a far larger Air Force transport plane than the one used by former Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Pelosi, a California Democrat, asked for access to a C-32 plane, a military version of the Boeing 757-200. Hastert, an Illinois Republican, flew in a small commuter-sized jet.

A Defense Department spokesman said Wednesday that the Pentagon informed Pelosi's staff that she would be provided with a plane but that its size would be based on availability.

Senate confirms new intelligence chief

Retired Vice Adm. Mike McConnell was confirmed on a Senate voice vote Wednesday to become the nation's second national intelligence director.

McConnell replaces John Negroponte, who was nominated to become deputy secretary of the State Department.

McConnell, a former director at the National Security Agency, was first commissioned as a Navy line officer in 1967. He gained renown as an intelligence briefer who could present complex national security matters to policymakers.
