It's all according to taste

You know IT when you find IT: It's something unique, something out of the way, something you could find only at one place in the Brandon and South Shore area. Send your picks, finds and hidden treasures to brandon@sptimes.com. Customers often introduce themselves to WineStyles owner Cheryl Mellon by admitting that they aren't wine connoisseurs. "I say, 'Great. You've come to the right place.' " WineStyles opened six weeks ago on Big Bend Road in Riverview. Mellon, a former marketing analyst for AT&T, hopes customers will like the relaxed ambience there as much as she does. Unlike retailers that group wine according to type or place of origin, WineStyles displays its inventory by taste. Red wines range from bold to fruity. White wines can be rich, silky or crisp. Mellon orders from smaller vineyards around the world, looking for quality tastes at a modest price. Most of the 150 varieties in the store sell for less than $25. A nook at the back of the store carries higher-priced wines such as a Lynch Moussas Pauillac, a French Bordeaux that sells for $56, or the Seduction Red $41, the bottle packaged in a crimson silk sleeve that says Valentine's Day. You can find WineStyles at 10273 Big Bend Road, west of U.S. 301. The store is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday. The store offers free weekly tastings at 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Call 672-3400. Andrew Meacham can be reached at 661-2431 or ameacham@sptimes.com.
