Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Two county locales, one leader

Anita Hearl flexed her muscle as one of Hernando County's premier female bowlers again last week. What made her performance so impressive was her ability to bowl at a high level consistently between two houses.

While competing in sanctioned leagues at both Mariner Lanes and Spring Hill Lanes, Hearl shot the two highest scratch series in the county. The third highest, a 640 from Karen Graham, was more than 20 pins behind Hearl's totals.

Hearl began the week by tossing a 661 in the Gator High Rollers League at Spring Hill last Monday. The peak of her three-game stretch was higher than later in the week as she tossed a 255 game, placing her second in the county there.

On Friday, she moved as usual to her regular spot on the lanes at Mariner, where she competes in the Friday Early Mariners League. With a 234 game leading the way, she totaled a 662 series that day across town.

Alice Rose, a regular at Spring Hill, also had an exceptional week in two separate leagues. Competing in the same Gator High Rollers League, she shot a 236 game on her way to a 622 series.

She followed that up with solid scores in the Joni Classic League at Spring Hill on Thursday night. Rose shot a county-leading 258 scratch game that evening on her way to a 574 series.

Between the same two leagues last season, Rose averaged a 179 in 219 games according the U.S. Bowling Congress yearbook. Hearl shot a 194 between the two leagues in which she now competes (208 games).

MARINER ACHIEVEMENTS: Three separate USBC achievements occurred at Mariner Lanes last week with John Carbone's perfect game leading the way.

On Monday during the Mavericks League, Carbone shot his 300 to go with a 683 series. Later that night, Andrew Bolander followed that mark by tossing his county-leading scratch series. Bolander had a 298 game and a 777 series that night.

The next night Frank Paino added his name to the achievement list during the Tuesday Men's League. Paino led off with 11 consecutive strikes before finishing with a 293. His final series score ended up at 665.

Finally, the influx of top scores ended with Victor Oliver's performance in the Tuesday Metro League. Oliver shot a 743 series on the strength of a 289 high game.

700 AT LOUIE'S: Bill Maxey has been competing at Louie's Bowling Center in Brooksville for years. Last Tuesday, he became the latest in a string of patrons to show signs of what the center is becoming when he tossed a 700 scratch series. In the Tangerine League, Maxey hit 700 on the button with his 258 high game leading the way.

Since coming under new ownership, the scores and general efficiency at Louie's has improved. Maxey, who averaged 178 in that same Tangerine League last season, should be one of many Louie's competitors to catch attention there in the coming months.
