- For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

PBA Tour hits Lone Star state
By ERIC MUSKATEVC
Published February 9, 2007
The PBA Tour returns to the Dallas area for the first time since the 2004 season for the GEICO Classic. This week's event marks the Tour's first stop at AMF Irving Lanes. The last time the Tour was in the Dallas Metroplex was for the 2005 Dallas Open when Patrick Allen captured the first of his back-to-back titles, propelling him to the 2004 PBA Player of the Year award. Former Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher John Burkett has been awarded the Commissioner's Exemption for this week's event. The event also will be a homecoming for five bowlers. Del Ballard Jr., Chris Barnes, Patrick Healey Jr., Chris Johnson and Wes Malott will all look to impress the hometown fans. The live ESPN finals are Sunday at 12:30 p.m. Last week, after suffering through the longest winless drought of his career, Mika Koivuniemi finally returned to the top, defeating Barnes 214-185 in the Sun City Classic title match to capture his seventh career PBA Tour title and his first since the 2005 Baby Ruth Real Deal Classic in March 2005. Koivuniemi had a solid season in 2005-06 despite not bringing home a title as he made three TV appearances and finished 10th in the PBA World Point Rankings. Going into last week, however, he was just 19th in the rankings with just one TV appearance. Having his coach, Ron Hoppe, with him the past few weeks has helped the Finland native get back on track. As the No. 30 seed last week, Koivuniemi became the lowest seed ever to win a Tour event since the single-elimination match-play format began in the 2001 (not counting the first half of 2004 when the round of 64 was match play). Before Koivuniemi's win, the lowest seed to win in the format was Pete Weber, who won last season's 2005 BowlersParadise.com Classic as the No. 29 seed. MERGER: Ebonite International Inc. entered into an agreement for an asset purchase of Columbia Industries, including the Columbia, Track and Dyno-Thane brands of bowling equipment, William T. Scheid, president of Ebonite announced in a USBC press release. Terms were not disclosed. Manufacturing of bowling balls for these brands, currently being done at the company's manufacturing facility in San Antonio, Texas, will be moved to Ebonite International's Hopkinsville, Ky. BOWL FOR CURE: Since the inception of Bowl for the Cure in the 2000-01 season, USBC bowlers have raised nearly $5-million toward the fight against breast cancer. This season, USBC is challenging its members to raise a record $1-million. Now is the time to get involved because February is Bowl for the Cure month. Work with your association, league and local Susan G. Komen for the Cure affiliate to raise funds. Whether you stage a Bowl for the Cure local tournament or collect pledges during league bowling, every donation brings the USBC closer to its fund-raising goal.
