School gets $5,000 to beautify campus

Ridgecrest Elementary School has received a $5,000 Toolbox for Education Grant from Lowe's to renovate, beautify and expand the school's outdoor campus area. Students, parents, staff members and the community have been invited to work on the project from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the school, 1901 119th St. N. The project, called Panther Pridelands, is meant to create outdoor instructional space and promote a sense of native Florida on the campus.

Festival celebrates Italian culture

The fourth annual San Gennaro Festa, which honors the patron saint of Naples, Italy, moves from Safety Harbor to Coachman Park overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway this weekend. The two-day event celebrates Italian heritage and culture by featuring traditional Italian artisans, live music and, of course, food. Attendees can stomp grapes, play bocci ball and enter cannoli- and meatball-eating contests. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The headline act both nights is Sonny Geraci and the Outsiders. Other performers include John and Mary K. Wilson, the Tarantella Dancers and Dino Diliberti. Admission is $3, and proceeds benefit cancer research, All Children's Hospital, local schools and scholarships.

For pups, let the good times roll

Dress your "party animal" in Mardi Gras attire for the sixth annual Dunedin Mardi Party for Pups Festival from 8 to 11 a.m. today at Pioneer Park, located at Main Street and Douglas Avenue. The parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Later, enjoy a free, fun-filled day with your dog at the Pinellas Animal Foundation's fifth annual Bowser Games from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Highlander Park, 1920 Pinehurst Road. Dogs run the huge agility or disc course or can be entered in contests for best costume, most impressive tricks, longest tail and most slobbery pet. Call (727) 710-7387 or visit www.pinellasanimal foundation.org.
