  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Jonaey Peyton, recently cleared of attempted murder in a July shooting, is back in jail. The Sheriff's Office arrested Peyton, 18, Thursday on drug charges. His arrest report says deputies were doing a narcotics investigation in the area of 20654 Wormack Road close to midnight. Peyton was seen trying to hide a brown package containing a pill bottle with less than an ounce of crack cocaine, a plastic bag with less than an ounce of ecstasy and 12 baggies of marijuana, the report says. In December, Peyton went to trial accused of shooting 31-year-old Chanel Cato on July 26 outside her McKray Road mobile home. Her father, Ponce, was shot, too. He testified that he saw Peyton with a gun that night but said he didn't see who shot him. Chanel Cato said it was Peyton. The former Pasco High School football player faced life in prison if convicted, but a jury acquitted him. Friday, he was in jail in Land O'Lakes. Bail was set at $23,500.

Man shot by deputy still hospitalized

Terrance Eugene Moore was still hospitalized Friday after being shot once in the chest Thursday by a sheriff's deputy who was trying to prevent Moore from striking him with a vehicle, authorities said. His exact condition was not known. Moore, 33, of 510 East Morgan Road, Tarpon Springs, faces a charge of aggravated battery on a law-enforcement officer. He was shot by Det. Abe Carmack, who was trying to stop Moore on suspicion of drugs and an active warrant. Authorities said Moore smashed another detective's cruiser before bearing down on Carmack. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. It was the agency's first shooting involving a deputy in nearly 18 months.

Neo-Nazi's trial is set for April 2

Neo-Nazi John Allen Ditullio's trial date is set for April 2. Authorities say Kristofer King and Patricia Wells were attacked by a masked, knife-wielding assailant on March 23, 2006. King, 17, died in the attack. In October, a grand jury indicted Ditullio and in December he was granted the right to defend himself. The judge also ordered the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office to decide next week whether it will seek the death penalty for Ditullio.
