What percentage of American taxpayers get refunds from their federal income tax filings? In 2005, two of every five taxpayers got money back. The IRS received 226.6-million total tax returns for that year. Of these, 109-million received refunds totaling $270-billion. The IRS collected a total of $2.27-trillion that year.
