Having already defeated defending state champion Bartow in its season opener, Hernando was looking at its softball matchup against Pasco on Tuesday night as a chance to figure out where the Leopards stand in the district.

But heavy rains forced cancellation of the game, which will be made up later in the season.

"We were going to use (Tuesday) as a measuring stick," Hernando coach Kevin Bittinger said. "Pasco is a pretty good team. (Tuesday) would have given us a pretty good picture of where we stand."

ALUMNI UPDATE: Former Central standout Alex Ruoff, now a sophomore guard at West Virginia, has been on fire lately (a seven-point, five-foul effort in a loss to Georgetown on Monday, notwithstanding). On Saturday, he sparked a 70-65 upset of second-ranked UCLA by scoring 18 and hitting three 3-pointers in the nationally-televised game. He is averaging 9.7 points and 5.0 assists per game. ...Former Hernando star Bernice Mosby scored 17 and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead No. 15 Baylor 81-64 over Iowa State on Saturday. The senior is averaging 18.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. ...Former Hernando star Kyle Swanston scored two and grabbed four rebounds in James Madison's 67-64 loss to Northeastern on Saturday. The sophomore is averaging 5.7 points and 2.8 rebounds.
