  • For their own good

Two pairs of candidates will square off at the Walton Community Center, 400 S Walton Ave., tonight in the first of two public forums with the contenders in the March 13 election. Vying for mayor are incumbent Beverley Billiris and a political newcomer, Harry J. Andropoulos, who builds houses and owns rental properties. City Commissioner Peter Dalacos is up against another political novice, David C. Bolton, an ordained minister, an ophthalmic technician and college student. The candidates will take the stage at 7:15 p.m. to field questions from the public. The event is hosted by the Greater Tarpon Springs Democratic Club. The Rotary Club will sponsor a second public forum at the Tarpon Springs Yacht Club at noon Feb. 22.

Center plans night for Mardi Gras

The Palm Harbor Community Center, 1500 16th St., is having a Mardi Gras night with entertainment by Christine Maloney and a Cajun chicken dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. Bring your own beverage. Cost is $8; $7 for center members. Advanced paid reservations suggested. Call (727) 771-6000.

Witnesses make finding car easy

The men fled in a getaway car, but not before witnesses saw its make, model and tag number, authorities said. After that, finding Brian Beckwith, 28, of Dunedin and Gerald Cassell, 20, of Clearwater wasn't too hard. Officials said a masked Beckwith entered GTE Federal Credit Union, 2460 State Road 580, at 1 p.m. Monday. He demanded cash, got an undisclosed amount and left in a white Isuzu Trooper driven by Cassell, authorities said. Deputies later found the men at a Clearwater home, where they also recovered money and clothing connected to the robbery. Beckwith was charged with unarmed robbery and Cassell with being a principal to robbery. Both were being held Tuesday at the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

SPCA to host day for bird adopters

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Tampa Bay, 9099 130th Ave. N, will host a bird adoption day with Safe Haven Avian Placement Services from noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 25. Exotic birds, including parakeets and cockatoos, will be looking for new homes. Prospective adopters should be able to commit several hours a day to interact with the birds and should bring completed applications along with proof of appropriate-size travel carriers. For an application, visit www.safehavenfl.org or www.SPCATampaBay.org. Call (727) 586-3591.

Clarification

The weekend's Religion Briefs did not make clear the schedule for three events: Kali Schnieders' appearance at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Largo, Guadalupe Lamas' appearance at the Unitarian Universalists of Clearwater and a church youth group dinner at Christ Presbyterian Church of Largo. All three events are scheduled for Saturday.
