County official injured in car crash

Early Edition: County Emergency Management Director Gary Vickers lost control of his car and struck a tree Tuesday night.

Published February 14, 2007

Pinellas County Emergency Management Director Gary Vickers is in the hospital in critical condition after suffering multiple broken bones in a car crash Tuesday night.

Vickers, 53, is expected to recover fully, officials said Wednesday. Vickers is well-known to many residents as the county’s chief spokesman during emergencies such as hurricanes.

Vickers was driving north on a rain-slicked Countryside Boulevard shortly before 10:30 p.m., according to Clearwater police. Just south of State Road 580, Vickers apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.
