Rep. Norwood dies at 65 after cancer battle

Rep. Charles Norwood, a Georgia dentist who rode to office on a Republican tidal wave in 1994, died Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2007) after battling cancer. Rep. Norwood, 65, died at his home in Augusta, Ga. House members paused for a moment of silence in his honor.

Rep. Norwood suffered from a chronic lung disease and later developed metastatic cancer that spread from his lung to his liver.

The vacancy created by Norwood's death will be filled by a special election, to be held no fewer than 30 days after the vacancy is created, according to state law.

S.C. black leaders back Clinton in primary

Two key black political leaders in South Carolina who backed John Edwards in 2004 said Tuesday they are supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the Democratic nomination.

State Sens. Robert Ford and Darrell Jackson said they believe Clinton is the only Democrat who can win the presidency. Ford said Illinois Sen. Barack Obama winning the primary would drag down the rest of the party.

"Every Democrat running on that ticket next year would lose - because he's black and he's top of the ticket," Ford said.

Negroponte starts State Department job

John Negroponte was a popular boss on his first day of work at the State Department on Tuesday. He told everybody to go take the afternoon off.

Negroponte, confirmed Monday to be Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's deputy, addressed employees and announced they could go home at 2 p.m. because of bad weather.

At the State Department, Negroponte will oversee policy on Iraq, China and Sudan and other portfolios.

Ex-CIA official indicted in corruption inquiry

The CIA's former No. 3 official was indicted Tuesday on suspicion of taking vacations, helicopter rides and jet flights from a defense contractor who was also charged.

A federal grand jury returned 11 counts against Kyle "Dusty" Foggo, executive director of the CIA until he resigned in May, and contractor Brent Wilkes. The charges stem from the same investigation that sent former U.S. Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham to prison last year.
