Fair association wants to help with your tuition bills

The Hernando County Fair Association will award $2,000 in scholarships for the 2006-07 school year.

Applications are available at all county high schools, as well as on the fairgrounds Web site at

Applicants must be Hernando County high school seniors or college students with a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher.

Preference will be given to applicants who have been active in the Hernando County Fair within the past five years.

The application deadline is April 2.

Post 99 opens door for its 75th anniversary

Andrew Jackson Post 99 American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary Unit 99 will mark their 75th anniversary with a gala celebration and anniversary dinner Feb. 25 at the post home, 208 E Fort Dade Ave.

Legion and auxiliary executives throughout Florida, as well as local dignitaries, will attend. A cocktail hour will be from 3 to 4 p.m., with dinner served at 4:15 p.m. Tickets are $7.50 per person. Reservations are a must.

The post will also have an open house for prospective members from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 at the post home.

Baseball coaches can earn certification

The Brooksville Recreation Department will conduct youth baseball coaches certification training sessions.

The training will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 and 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place. Participants will receive certification through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association.

Roasted sheriff is on fundraiser's menu

A fundraiser for the Enrichment Centers of Hernando County is planned for 5 p.m. April 21 at SNPJ Hall, 13383 County Line Road.

The event will include a "roast," silent auction, dinner and entertainment. Local "celebrities" to be roasted include John Druzbick, Sheriff Richard Nugent and Mickey Smith.

Tickets are $35 per person. Reservations are required by March 20. For information and reservations, call 597-6331.


Auxiliary's auction is actually a raffle

The Knights of Columbus 11317 Ladies Auxiliary will host its 12th annual auction March 24 in the parish hall at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 13485 Spring Hill Drive.

This will be a raffle-auction, where participants apportion their raffle tickets among auction items they wish to "bid" on.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. The auction will include a variety of baskets and other items.

Major leaguers to teach youth clinics

Baseball players ages 9 to 18 can participate in the Jack Hubbard Clinic the West Hernando Little League's Freedom Field on Deltona Boulevard.

The clinic will be provided on the following days:

- 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday for ages 9-12

- 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday for ages 13-14

- 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday for ages 15-16

- 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday for ages 17-18

The baseball clinic is a preseason fundamentals workout. Coaching will be provided in all areas, including pitching, bunting, catching, infield, outfield and base running.

All coaches are former Major League Baseball coaches or players.

The cost is $28 per player. Participants may sign up by calling 684-5831, sending e-mail to or at the field on the day of the clinic.
