University of Florida environmental historian Jack E. Davis will discuss how the enduring struggle that has shaped Florida's past has not been between humans but between humans and the environment, at 7 p.m. today at the Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive. The discussion is part of the Florida Humanities Council's Road Scholar program. Organizers say Davis promotes a historical memory of Florida with nature at its center and contends that this memory becomes increasingly important as our culture retreats deeper into air-conditioned, artificial spaces. Free. Call 587-6715, ext. 2514.

Deputy accused of domestic battery

An off-duty Pinellas County sheriff's patrol deputy was arrested early Wednesday on a domestic battery charge after a scuffle with his former fiancee, authorities said. Deputy Jeffery Martin, 32, who lives in New Port Richey, was being held without bail in the Land O'Lakes jail. According to a Pasco sheriff's report, Martin and the woman were arguing over personal belongings about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday. At one point, Martin grabbed her around the torso to stop her from entering a bedroom, she told authorities. Later, in trying to knock a camera out of her hand, Martin hit the woman's arm, bruising it. Martin also had scratches on his back, but Pasco deputies said he was the primary aggressor. As per policy, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office will conduct an administrative investigation into the incident, but because it was a misdemeanor charge, Martin, a deputy for 4 1/2 years, will remain on the job.
