Current movies recommended by the Times:

1 Pan's Labyrinth - The best film of 2006, nominated for six Academy Awards, is a harrowing fairy tale concocted in the mind of a young girl and set against the terrors of postwar Spanish fascism.

2 Letters From Iwo Jima - Clint Eastwood (above) revisits the World War II battle from the Japanese perspective. Paired with Flags of Our Fathers, it's a top 10 film experience of 2006 and an Oscar best picture nominee.

3 Notes on a Scandal - Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett earned Oscar nominations for this smartly written, intense drama of sexual obsessions.

4 Venus - Peter O'Toole earned his eighth Academy Award nomination playing a randy, aging actor with a taste for young women - not unlike O'Toole himself.

5 The Queen - Helen Mirren's portrayal of Queen Elizabeth after the death of Princess Diana earned a best actress Oscar nomination in this best picture contender.
