Man gets 12 years for leaving site of crash that killed teen

TAMPA - They were two strangers whose lives intersected on a cool night in March. The pedestrian, a 16-year-old girl with curly blond hair and a smile that could light up a room, died that night. And now the driver, a floor installer with an 8-year-old daughter, will go to prison for leaving her in the road. Micah Azbill, 31, was sentenced Thursday in Hillsborough Circuit Court to 12 years in prison for not stopping after the March 18 accident. Azbill, who has a lengthy history of driving offenses, drove off after hitting Devyn Burke on U.S. 41 in Lutz. He abandoned his car after it broke down seven miles from the crash site, then walked a mile to a friend's house before that friend told him to go back. Judge Lamar Battles cited Azbill's driving history and blatant disregard for the victim in handing down the relatively harsh sentence. Azbill could have received as little as 22 months. Azbill won't ever be allowed to have a driver's license in Florida. Devyn's friends and relatives, who wore T-shirts bearing smiling photographs of the girl, celebrated the sentence. It was a bittersweet end to almost six hours of testimony from the families of the victim and the defendant. Azbill, who did not show any emotion during testimony from medical experts and traffic investigators, slumped down and openly sobbed when his sisters apologized to Devyn's family. He continued to cry as he read from a two-page letter. "I would like to express my deepest apologies," he said. "If there were anything I could do to make this all go away, I would do it in a second."

Everyone in the civilized world knows what to do in an accident: Stop, see if anyone is hurt, call 911, stay there until police arive. Simple rules to follow. Break them and you go to jail. PERIOD! Should appy to EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE! About time.

My daughter accepted responsibility for her actions and she never got in trouble prior, no dui's , not even a traffic ticket. It only takes one time and your life changes forever on both sides of the family. The system has broken down.

He left the scene of the accident probably because he was drinking. This way he couldn't get connvicted of DUI manslaughter an automatic 15 yrs in prison. My daughter stayed at the site and tried to help her victim, she's in prison now. Justice ?

What a tragedy. But I have to say a "long histrory of driving related offenses" shows he never learned his lesson. He never learned to be less wreckless and watch out for others on the road. I bet he learns his lesson now. The sentence is just.

This is in response to Emily, stop being so judgemental you don't know all the details of the case you mentioned, only what the media chose to tell you. Stop judging what you don't know!

I would also like to add how unfair the State of florida is that they pick and choose who they would like to lock up for a long time. Let's not forget the young lady who hit and killed those children crossing the street and hid for a week before

This is a really sad story for both families and I would like to send my regards to the Burke family. As for the Azbill's I do think that the sentence was very harsh everyone does make mistakes and reacts differantly in situacions.

Thank you for following this story. My daughter Morgan has been devastated by this loss as Devyn was her best friend. Everyone makes mistakes, but he intentioanlly left little Devyn in the road, with no regard for human life. Devyn will be missed.
