Bill Murray's character, Carl Spackler, never got the gopher in Caddyshack, but he has left fans reciting his lines from the movie 27 years later. In honor of Murray's appearance in this weekend's Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am with golfer Scott Simpson, Times golf writer Bob Harig has 18 questions to test your knowledge and a few tidbits you might not have known.
1 Who played Judge Smails?
2 Who performs the song that is played on the radio in Al Czervik's (Rodney Dangerfield) golf bag?
3 What brand of candy bar falls into the pool and causes a panic?
4 What is the time frame that caddies are allowed at the pool for Caddie Day?
5 Spackler claims to have a license to kill gophers that was granted by which organization?
6 What type of golf ball does Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) use?
7 Where does Lacey Underall live?
8 What is the final value of the bet between the teams of Smails/Dr. Beeper and Webb/Czervik?
9 What are the names of the tough guys Czervik sends after Smails to collect his money?
10 What is the last name of the man who accompanies Czervik on his first visit to the club?
11 How many swings did Spackler take when he was hitting flowers and pretending to be hitting shots at the Masters?
12 What color golf ball does Czervik use?
13 What is the first name of the man who runs the caddy shack?
14 Where does the movie take place?
15 Spackler is the assistant, but who is the head greenskeeper?
16 Czervik says country clubs and what are the biggest wastes of prime real estate?
17 What brand of drink does Smails offer Danny Noonan when they meet in the judge's office?
18 When Spackler imagines winning the Masters, how many yards away is his final shot?
- That Bill Murray improvised the "Cinderella story" scene? Director Harold Ramis simply asked Murray to emulate a kid announcing his own fantasy sports moment. Murray asked for four rows of mums and did the scene in one take.
- That the scene that begins when Ty Webb's golf ball sails into Carl Spackler's unkempt house was not in the original script? Ramis added it after realizing two of his biggest stars, Murray and Chevy Chase, did not have a scene together in the movie. The three met for lunch and wrote the scene together.
- The character of Lou, played by co-writer Brian Doyle-Murray (and brother of Bill), is the only one to say the word "caddyshack."
- Tiger Woods is a big fan of Caddyshack. Woods played Spackler in an American Express commercial that had references to several scenes in the movie.
- The movie was inspired, in part, by Doyle-Murray's memories of his time spent as a caddie at a country club. Ramis and Murray also caddied during their youth.
