TALLAHASSEE - The University of Florida would charge its undergraduate students a $500 fee for each semester they attend school to hire 300 more faculty members and academic advisers, under a bill introduced Monday in the Florida Legislature.

Gov. Charlie Crist already has come out against the idea.

"We need to reduce the faculty-to-student ratio, which is really at an all-time high compared to other great universities," said state Sen. Steve Oelrich, R-Cross Creek, the bill's sponsor.

Florida President Bernie Machen and Mark Rosenberg, chancellor of the State University System of Florida, also spoke in favor of the bill.

SUV crosses center line, three kids die

GREEN COVE SPRINGS - Three children died Monday in a crash on a Clay County bridge.

A sport utility vehicle heading west off the Shands Bridge on State Route 16, just south of Jacksonville, apparently crossed the center line, hitting two oncoming minivans and a pickup truck, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Three small children - two girls and a boy - died at the scene. Two of the children were in one of the minivans, and one child was in the SUV, authorities said. Five others - a mix of adults and children - were taken to Shands Jacksonville medical center.

Names of the dead and injured were not immediately released.
