SAFETY HARBOR

Now entire street named for MLK

Safety Harbor city commissioners voted unanimously Monday night to rename what is now M.L. King Street N/Fourth Street N to Dr. ML King Jr Street N in honor of the civil rights hero. Residents of the black community and members of the Safety Harbor African Alliance have waited more than 16 years for this day. "It was a long wait, but I'm elated," alliance treasurer Barbara Bronson said. "It's something I didn't want to give up on." Assistant City Manager Matt Spoor said his office is already studying various designs, and that all 21 street signs on the 6,608-foot road will probably be replaced within two months. "We're going to move as fast as possible," he said. "Once we get the materials, it will be a top priority."

Skateboard park named for Tilmann

Safety Harbor city commissioners made another name change at Monday's meeting. They decided to rename the skateboard facility after Ian Tilmann, a 28-year-old man who died in 2005 after falling headfirst from a skateboard on Hercules Avenue's "Cemetery Hill" in Clearwater. Since the accident, his parents, Barry and Marcy Tilmann of Safety Harbor, have channeled their grief into a mission to save lives, giving away hundreds of helmets to children and teens who live as far away as Jacksonville through the nonprofit Ian Tilmann Foundation. The commission's decision was a comfort to the Tilmanns, who were heartbroken recently when Clearwater officials demanded that they remove a roadside memorial the couple had set up in memory of their son, saying it violated a city ordinance.

Correction

The current president of Old Palm Harbor Main Street Association is Jan Montelaro. A story Monday named a different person.
