Funds available for emergency aid

Hernando County has been chosen to receive more than $24,500 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The funding was decided by a national board chaired by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency. A local board will distribute funds to area food and shelter programs. Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must follow these terms: be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government; have an accounting system; practice nondiscrimination; have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board. Agencies that qualify are encouraged to apply. The deadline to submit an application is March 9. Contact Kathy Jones at the United Way of Hernando County at 688-2026.

Because of imprecise information from the Florida Highway Patrol, the wrong location was given for a car crash that killed two people Monday night. The correct location for the crash is near the intersection of Indian Bay Road and Osowaw Boulevard.
