Entertainment, soul food fill day in park

ENTERTAINMENT, SOUL FOOD FILL DAY IN PARK FEST

Two big events are coming up this weekend for Black History Month: The "Day in the Park" will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Park on N Apopka Avenue. There will be food and entertainment. The Gospel Song Festival will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. James AME Church, 204 N Apopka Ave.

WEEKI WACHEE

Peace, justice coalition to rally

The Nature Coast Coalition for Peace and Justice will hold a peace demonstration on the Iraq war and the new threat of war with Iran from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at U.S. 19 and State Road 50 across from the Weeki Wachee attraction.

INVERNESS

Voter drive set for black history event

The Citrus County Supervisor of Elections Office will conduct a voter awareness and registration drive 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Park. The drive will take place during the Inverness Black History Club's Day in the Park. Election office staff will register voters, update signatures and take name, address or party affiliation changes. Call Patrick Thomas at 341-6740.

Residents asked to be careful of fire

Abnormally dry conditions continuing in Citrus and Hernando counties have prompted the Withlacoochee Forestry Center to issue a request for the public to use common sense and help avoid the possible outbreak and spread of wildfires. Report any suspicious fire by calling 911; never leave a fire unattended; burn yard waste during the morning hours and avoid burning during dry, windy conditions; clear dead vegetation within 30 feet from homes and keep gutters and roofs clear of debris; know and comply with state and county open burning laws. For information regarding burning regulations or for fire prevention tips, call the center at (352) 754-6777.

Gardeners discuss caring for palms

Master gardeners from the Extension Service offer monthly programs across the county. The March program is "Cold Hardy Palms and Their Care" and will be presented at these times and locations:

Coastal Region Library: at 1:30 p.m. March 9, 8619 W Crystal St., Crystal River.

Central Ridge Library: at 1 p.m. March 14, 425 W Roosevelt Blvd., Beverly Hills.

Citrus Springs Library: at 1:30 p.m. March 21, 1826 W Country Club Blvd., Citrus Springs.

Lakes Region Library: at 2 p.m. March 13 (general plant clinics conducted every Tuesday), 1511 Druid Road, Inverness.

Fire Station 12: 2 p.m. March 26, 5000 W Oak Park Drive, Homosassa.

Residents with plant questions or problems are welcome to bring samples to the clinics.

In addition to the prepared program, gardeners will answer questions.
