  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Central

District: Class 3A, District 5 (Springstead, Land O'Lakes, Ridgewood, River Ridge, Wesley Chapel, Lake Weir, Leesburg, Belleview)

Coach: Hank Deslaurier

Key losses: Tony Bulso, Mike Paulter, Kyle Staton, Shawn Wilson

Lineup: No. 1 Jon Hayes, Sr.; No. 2 John Fiske, Fr.; No. 3 Matt Frketic, Jr.; No. 4 Mike Territo, Jr.; No. 5 Greg Ressel, Sr.; No. 1 doubles Hayes/Fiske; No. 2 doubles Frketic/Territo

Outlook: As soon as the state tournament ended last year (the Bears advanced for the first time), Deslaurier acknowledged 2007 would be a rebuilding year. The only returnee from last year's record-breaking squad is Jon Hayes, who played No. 5 singles. Deslaurier likes the senior's chances at No. 1, but behind him is a lot of inexperience. Though they may not compete this year, Deslaurier says his team reminds him of when last year's senior class was in its sophomore year.

Springstead

District: Class 3A, District 5 (Central, Land O'Lakes, Ridgewood, River Ridge, Wesley Chapel, Lake Weir, Leesburg, Belleview)

Coach: Lou Giglio

Key losses: Clay Etchison

Lineup: No. 1 David Roebuck, Sr.; No. 2 Frank Stancanelli, Sr.; No. 3 Kris Baker, Sr.; No. 4 McKenzie Olivares, So.; No. 5 Brian Roebuck, So.; No. 1 doubles Roebuck/Stancanelli; No. 2 doubles Baker/Olivares.

Outlook: The loss of Etchison at No. 1 hurts the Eagles, who may struggle to keep up with teams like Hernando and Nature Coast. Giglio says he likes the team's depth from No. 2 down, saying "there's not a whole lot of difference from No. 2 down through No. 4)."

Hernando

District: Class 2A, District 6 (Gulf, Hudson, Nature Coast, Pasco, South Lake, Zephyrhills)

Coach: Tony Miziko

Key losses: Raleigh Williams

Lineup: No. 1 Chris Nyholm, Fr.; No. 2 Chris Walters, Jr.; No. 3 Lance Vandervoort, Sr.; No. 4 Erik Lawson, Jr.; No. 5 Jesse Lane, So.; No. 1 doubles Nyholm/Walters; No. 2 doubles Vandervoort/Lawson

Outlook: The Leopards hope to repeat last year's performance, when they advanced to regionals before losing 6-1 to Lecanto. The loss of Raleigh Williams, who graduated early to attend Brigham Young, will hurt, but Miziko says freshman Chris Nyholm should replace him adequately at No. 1 singles.

Nature Coast

District: Class 2A, District 6 (Hernando, Gulf, Hudson, Pasco, South Lake, Zephyrhills)

Coach: Tom Brown

Key losses: Ken Alligier

Lineup: No. 1 Jonathan Kidder, Sr.; No. 2 P.J. Watterson, So.; No. 3 Anthony Carter, Jr.; No. 4 David Harres, So.; No. 5 Ben DeAngelis, So.; Doubles to be determined

Outlook: Kidder returns at No. 1 singles, while the rest of his team remains largely intact from last season. With Central rebuilding, Nature Coast should challenge Hernando for county supremacy while making noise in the district.
