Lessons applied to the lanes

Neffer's Bowl again was the home of some of the highest scores in Citrus County this past week with Chris Williams leading the way. Williams, a regular at Neffer's, is considered a student of the game by many colleagues. His hard work and practice paid off last Friday during the Suncoast Mixed League when he shot a 289 high game. It went a long way toward helping Williams achieve the highest scratch series 759 of any county resident for the week. Before the 289, Williams had never racked up a U.S. Bowling Congress achievement. Averaging 208 last season, he competes exclusively in Suncoast Mixed. Travis Neff, always among the high games for the county, shot his first perfect game since Dec. 23, 2005. It came in the Nightcrawlers League on Monday night at Neffer's. He finished the evening with a 696 series. Matt Ivkovic was one strike from a 300 when he tossed a 299 last week during the Wednesday Night Men's League at the center. Ivkovic finished with a 714 series. The score was his fifth USBC achievement of the 2006-07 season. SCRATCH SHOOTOUT: The monthly Scratch Shootout at Manatee Lanes was last weekend at the center, with the top scores in the county coming from the event. One perfect game and one 800 series were shot on the lanes during the competition. J.J. Hilbert, a bowler originating out of Lake City, made the trip to Crystal River worthwhile, tossing an 813 series on the strength of his 296 high game. Hilbert finished second in the overall singles competition and earned $130. The singles champion was Mike Pozzi, a regular at Manatee. Pozzi walked away with $250 for the victory. He also joined another Manatee regular, Frank Sojka, to take second place in the doubles division. The duo took $90. The winners of the doubles event were Mike Herring and Elliott Ten from Orlando. Ten and Herring were awarded $150. Ten also finished fourth in the singles event, capturing $50. He tossed the only perfect game in the tournament.
