Editor's note: The following is a recap of the week's news events in Citrus County, in the words of the newsmakers. "We're still an attractive place for people to move to from the Northeast or the Midwest, and we're still seeing a lot of people moving up from the South Florida area." Gary Maidhof, director of development services for Citrus County, on the increase in building permits in January following a slow December. "This was just manna from heaven." County Commission Chairman Dennis Damato, on a $1.8-million grant from the state that can be used to offset the rising costs of building a new Emergency Operations Center. "In my heart, I don't think I'm going to get this position. But that doesn't stop me from applying." State Sen. Nancy Argenziano, who applied for a seat on the Public Service Commission but was not one of the people selected to be interviewed. "People, they want an easy explanation for it, but unfortunately, there isn't one. This was an accident, a freak accident." Joan Garland, of the International Crane Foundation, on the deaths of whooping cranes during a recent severe storm. "No one's interested in annexation. What would we get? More taxes and bickering?" Suzy Carney of Harbor Isles, one of the residents opposing efforts to annex the neighborhood into adjacent Crystal River. "This place was a landmark. Everyone knew each other." Frank Finger, a customer for 23 years of the Chicken King restaurant in Hernando, which burned down early Wednesday morning. "There is no difference between a terrorist and a bully." From a picket sign carried by Tracy Seavers outside the school district administration building. Seavers and another woman were protesting the actions of the district toward bullies who tormented their children.
