ST. PETERSBURG - Pinellas Technical Education Centers, St. Petersburg College and the University of South Florida St. Petersburg are each expecting hundreds of high school students this week, when the facilities open their campuses to those who have already passed the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.
Testing in reading, math and science begins Monday at county high schools, but upperclassmen who don't need to take the test can use the day to visit area colleges.
"A fair majority of most of our seniors have already passed the FCAT ... so we wanted to provide a useful alternative to the kids who don't have to take it," said Dave Barnes, director of workforce education for Pinellas County Schools.
The schools will provide information on majors or career tracks, and give tours.
Students who visit USF St. Petersburg must attend one of two hourlong information sessions that will cover a wide spectrum of issues like enrollment services, housing, financial aid and scholarships.
"The goal is that in between these two sessions, they'll be able to tour the campus and go into the residence hall," said university spokesperson Julie Booth.
SPC will provide maps for students in a "treasure hunt" format to encourage students to explore one of four campuses being featured, said SPC events specialist Frank Jurkovic.
Students will make stops to get information from departments including admissions, financial aid, various degree programs and student activities, said Mark Strickland, SPC's director of enrollment management.
