Attacks

- Militants struck back Feb. 18 in their first major blow against a U.S.-led security clampdown in Baghdad with car bombings that killed at least 64 people, left scores injured and sent a grim message to officials boasting that extremist factions were on the run.

- At least three bombings and one mortar attack killed 11 people in Baghdad on Monday, Iraqi officials said. A family of 13 was killed on the road leading to Fallujah, about 12 miles northwest of Baghdad, witnesses said.

- A string of blasts on Tuesday left at least 27 people dead in and around Baghdad and further rattled officials marking the first week of a major security crackdown seeking to calm the capital.

- Attacks in Baghdad and Najaf killed at least 23 on Wednesday.

- At least 19 people were killed or found dead Thursday, including 14 bullet-riddled bodies showing signs of torture that were found in Baghdad and two in the southeastern city of Kut. Three others were shot to death in the northern city of Mosul.

Military

- A U.S. military facility north of Baghdad was targeted Monday by suicide bombers and other armed men who killed two American soldiers and wounded 17 in an unusually brazen attack.

- The U.S. military warned Thursday that insurgents are adopting new tactics in a campaign to spread panic after troops uncovered a car bomb factory with propane tanks and chlorine cylinders - possible ingredients for more chemical attacks following three explosions involving chlorine.

- The U.S. military detained the son of one of America's closest political allies in Iraq for several hours Friday, raising the ire of Shiite Muslim officials and straining delicate relations with Iraqi leadership.

Rebuilding

- Senate Democrats on Feb. 18 pledged renewed efforts to curtail the Iraq war, suggesting they will seek to limit a 2002 measure authorizing President Bush's use of force against Saddam Hussein.

- The White House said Friday that Democrats should not try to revoke Congress' 2002 vote authorizing the war in Iraq and that pulling U.S. troops out would bring chaos.
