Melanie Hensley, Citrus County property appraiser, advises that all new homeowners, or existing homeowners who are now making Florida their primary residence and who currently reside in their home, should apply for the homestead exemption by Thursday .
You must have lived in the home on Jan. 1, own the home and be a Florida resident to qualify.
First-time applicants must provide documentation (copies) reflecting the current address, a Social Security card, Florida driver's license, and a Citrus County voter registration card, if registered to vote.
Documentation for all owners must be provided, even if they live somewhere else.
There are other exemptions available for disability, widow/widower, disabled veterans and blind people. A list of the additional exemptions and their requirements can be found on the property appraiser's Web site, www.pa.citrus.fl.us. You may obtain a printable application that may be mailed to the office with the proper documentation.
If you moved into a new home in 2006, you must reapply for 2007 homestead exemption and any other exemptions for which you qualify.
The exemptions do not transfer from one home to another or from one owner to another.
If you have questions regarding your eligibility please call 341-6600 or 795-7725 or visit www.pa.citrus.fl.us.
