Newest mermaids to take the plunge

The latest round of mermaid tryouts at Weeki Wachee Springs netted four new mermaids for the quirky underwater attraction. The four swimmers hired included Chelsea Hearn, 19, and Amanda Miles, 25, both of Brooksville. They will start the yearlong training right away, learning scuba at the 60-year-old attraction on U.S. 19, just south of State Road 50. Laura Leigh Gingerich, 22, drove 12 hours from Tennessee for a chance to become a mermaid. She starts in June, along with Lauren Dodson, 17-year-old senior at Nature Coast Technical High School.
