SPCA offers free spaying and neutering

COUNTYWIDE Spaying and neutering your four-legged friends can decrease the chances for many types of infections and cancers, particularly if the surgery is performed before the pet reaches maturity. The SPCA of Tampa Bay is offering free spay/neuter surgeries for the pets of people with limited income now through Saturday . The service includes vaccinations and rabies shots. The SPCA also offers free spay/neuter surgeries for pit bull terriers and pit bull mixes. To qualify, applicants must apply in person with recent 1040 forms from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Friday at the SPCA at 130th Ave. N, Largo. The Florida Highway Patrol is boosting patrols today and Thursday for a two-day crackdown on speeders and aggressive drivers. SAFETY HARBOR Couple sentenced to 5 years in prison A Safety Harbor couple convicted of stealing more than $500,000 from a relative with Alzheimer's disease has been sentenced to five years in prison. Susan and Jim Just each were sentenced Friday after being convicted Feb. 2 of exploitation of an elderly or disabled person. Curtis Crider, a Clearwater attorney representing the Just couple, has said they planned to appeal. According to authorities, Susan Just, 59, was given power of attorney over her uncle, Anthony Kishonas, in November 2001 when he began to show signs of dementia related to Alzheimer's. Just and her husband liquidated Kishonas' assets, including mutual funds and his house in Illinois. They then loaned themselves about $300,000 for their head-hunting firm, Just Management Services, authorities said. Kishonas died in February 2004. Correction NJR Development Co., is the developer of the Aqualea Resort and Residences on Clearwater Beach. A story Tuesday listed an incorrect developer for the project.
