St. Petersburg college to host FCAT day today

St. Petersburg College opens its campuses today to high school students who have passed the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Testing in reading, math and science began Monday at Pinellas high schools, but upperclassmen who don't need to take the test can use the day to visit SPC. The college will provide information on majors or career tracks and give tours. Students will get information on admissions, financial aid, degree programs and student activities, said Mark Strickland, director of enrollment management. FCAT Day begins at 9 a.m. at these campuses: St. Petersburg/Gibbs, 6605 Fifth Ave. N; Seminole, 9200 113th St. N; Clearwater, 2465 Drew St.; and Tarpon Springs, 600 Klosterman Road. Call 341-4772.

SPCA offers free spaying, neutering

Spaying and neutering your pets can decrease the chances for many types of infections and cancers, particularly if the surgery is performed before the animal reaches maturity. The SPCA of Tampa Bay is offering free spay/neuter surgeries for the pets of people with limited income now through Saturday . The service includes vaccinations and rabies shots. The SPCA also offers free spay/neuter surgeries for pit bull terriers and pit bull mixes. To qualify, applicants must apply in person with recent 1040 forms from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Friday at the SPCA, 130th Ave. N, Largo. Couple sentenced to 5 years in prison

A Safety Harbor couple convicted of stealing more than $500,000 from a relative with Alzheimer's disease has been sentenced to five years in prison. Susan and Jim Just each were sentenced Friday after being convicted Feb. 2 of exploitation of an elderly or disabled person. Curtis Crider, a Clearwater attorney representing the couple, has said they plan to appeal. Susan Just, 59, was given power of attorney over her uncle, Anthony Kishonas, in November 2001 when he began to show signs of dementia related to Alzheimer's, authorities said. Just and her husband liquidated Kishonas' assets, including mutual funds and his house in Illinois. They then loaned themselves about $300,000 for their head-hunting firm, Just Management Services, authorities said. Kishonas died in February 2004.

Lawmaker, county officials to model

Pinellas County Sheriff Jim Coats, Clerk of the Circuit Court Ken Burke, Tax Collector Diane Nelson and state Rep. Jim Frishe will model the latest fashions at the Belleair Women's Republican Club fashion show and lunch Friday at the Wine Cellar Restaurant, 17307 Gulf Blvd., North Redington Beach.
