How to play in the wind
By BRIAN RICHTER
Published March 1, 2007
There are a couple things to consider when it's windy. Accept that the wind is going to take your ball, and make sure you don't overswing, especially into the wind. Take an extra club or two and swing smoothly to ensure good, solid contact. In a crosswind choose a spot to the left or right of the target depending on the direction of the wind, then swing for that spot. Block out the pin as your target and accept the point you picked out.
Favorite area course other than home: Southern Hills Plantation Club in Brooksville. Pete Dye requires great shots, and I was lucky enough to have a hole-in-one on the 17th.
Favorite course nationally: The Ocean Course, Kiawah Island in South Carolina. I guess I enjoy torture. Another Pete Dye course that I played in 40- mph winds; what a challenge.
Best golfing advice ever received: Never allow yourself to get down and think you're out of it. Keep plugging away, and who knows what good may come of it.
