Ninth-seeded Eckerd topples No. 8 Saint Leo

BOCA RATON - Ninth-seeded Eckerd (7-21) ended eighth-seeded Saint Leo's season in the opening round of the Sunshine State Conference tournament with a 52-44 victory Wednesday.
The Tritons' Gabby Gattuso recorded a double double with a game-high 11 rebounds and 12 points, helping Eckerd advance to the quarterfinals to face top-seeded Rollins today at 5. Junior forward Marquita Fenn scored a game-high 19 for the No. 8 Lions (6-22) and was the only Saint Leo player in double figures.
Eckerd's biggest lead was 19 with 1:42 remaining before halftime. Saint Leo closed to within four with 40 seconds left, but Eckerd scored the final four points.
