    The future of Steve Stanton
What should Largo do about city manager Steve Stanton?
    Fire him
    Keep him

LARGO - Steve Stanton didn't see it coming. He didn't expect Largo city commissioners to fire him Tuesday night, just a week after he acknowledged he wanted to have a sex-change operation.

He planned to feel sorry for himself for a day or so.

But Stanton, Largo's city manager, didn't have a chance.

By Wednesday morning, he had transitioned from public official to public educator. Even as he remained on the city's payroll on paid administrative leave until his termination is final, his new role was beginning.

It started about 10 a.m., as Stanton, 48, swept his front porch after a sleepless night.

When a news truck pulled up, he went inside and hid. When the reporter knocked on the door, he consented to the first of what would become a daylong series of interviews with local television stations and National Public Radio.

He wanted to tell his story before the news media decided it was insignificant, he said.

He said he sought to help "the next person that comes out with the same disclosure so he doesn't suffer the same consequences."

Stanton has said for days he wants people to know what it means to be a transsexual, a person who identifies as the opposite sex and may seek to live as a member of this sex.

Wednesday's media attention gave him an opportunity he didn't want to waste.

Stanton wanted to explain why people like him often don't share their secret with others: "One of the complicating aspects is that you really can't tell someone you're a transsexual and expect they're not going to share that."

And disclosure risks almost everything, including a job you've succeeded at for 14 years, as Stanton discovered.

Stanton's tenure with the city has met with generally good reviews. Last fall, commissioners raised his salary nearly 9 percent to $140,234 a year.

His secret was leaked months before he intended to share it.

The Times reported Feb. 21 that Stanton was undergoing hormone therapy in preparation for gender-reassignment surgery - a plan that had been known only to a small circle of people, including his wife, medical team and a few top officials at City Hall.

He said he has barely slept since the public disclosure and didn't sleep at all after the commission voted Tuesday to fire him. He is currently on administrative leave and has five days to appeal the decision. He said he still may appeal.

"My body is still in that survival mode," he said. "It's been a long week."

He said he felt betrayed that somebody revealed his plans for a medical sex-change operation.

Stanton had an eight-page plan to acclimate staff. He believed his employees would have accepted him as a woman if he had had a chance to education them.

"No city manager has ever attempted to do this before," he said. "I was naive enough to think I could."

By early Wednesday afternoon, Stanton had received about 45 media calls, including one from a Canadian broadcaster. By mid-day, he had told his story to six media outlets.

After the interview at his home Wednesday morning, Stanton drove to Clearwater's recreational Long Center for another.

He sat at a park bench, where he often writes in his journal, near one of his favorite running trails. While there, he fielded a half-dozen media calls and phoned another to reschedule. He didn't want to miss an interview with NPR's All Things Considered, one of his favorite shows, he said.

As he pulled out of his parking space to head to St. Petersburg for another interview, another local TV reporter approached him. Stanton said that interview would have to wait.

By 2:45, Stanton was sitting in the Eugene Patterson archives, a tiny room at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, to be interviewed remotely by NPR's Michele Norris. (Poynter, a journalism school, owns the St. Petersburg Times.)

"I always kind a wondered what you have to do to get on NPR," he said. "Now I know."

The City did what others should do. More people should be bold for the Lord this would eliminate a lot of the deases and death that are being spreaded by such. In Gensis 12 & 13 the Lord Destroyed a whole city of men 0after men its Sin & God hate Sin

I don't agree with the City of Largo's decision. There are a lot of people who are transexual but are hiding their sexual orientation. I feel that if he is doing a good job, not hurting or harming anyone, they should leave him alone and he continue

Look at the back ground and moral structure of the people for and against the firing!

We the people of the Tampa bay area are proud of 5 commissioners in spite of the sp's. The next election will tell the story. May God bless you for standing tall for the city of Largo,Fl.

Some studies suggest that transsexualism (often confused with transvestism by the dimmer bulbs in the pack) is genetic. I know that if we met, I would treat Steve/Susan with respect: How many of her critics have the intelligence to earn $140K/year?

I think it took alot of courage to announce his dicission to become a women. His body may change, but a think his sharp mind won`t.. I think he has the right to live a full-happy life in the way he is happy not hurting any one . God bless him and

Barbara, that is BS. Sex and gender is the same thing. Gender identity problems are with the mind and only affects how people look at theirselves not their actual sex. You are born a man or a women, no mattter what your mind tells you.
    by Barbara 03/13/07 12:04 PM
There is a HUGE difference between sex and gender. And they rarely intersect. One's gender identity is developed weeks after their sex is determined in the womb, and it is all too possible for them to contradict each other. We all started female!!

I support Steve Stanton. Understandable that probably most in this country don't have any education with regard to what an individual goes through in order to make a decision like this one. He obviously is a valued employee. Support him.

We can thank Bill Clinton for introducing our kids to a Monica and now we can thank Steve/Suzie Stanton for introducing our kids to transvestites. Why can't people keep their sexual preferences to themselves. Will be a big joke in the mens room!!!!

I have had a relationship with a person who was a cross-dresser, What Steve is doing maybe right for him but it does affect how people may see him and repect him differently. All I can say is it takes a strong person to do it.

Wy dont your country just try to agree on this issue. This is a persons job and lively hood in focus. It seems that your country has a real hard time of dealing with these types of issues. Get on with it you hired the person not the sex.Let it go.

What ever happened to Equal Opportunity Employment? The City of Largo should be ashamed.
    by paul 03/11/07 03:32 PM
this thing is a freak and has deceived the largoians for 14 yrs. get rid of it now while you can! otherwise you're stuck w/it.

The liberals who demand that Christians ought to keep their moral views at home and church interestingly also demand the right to make their own public norm. How hypocritical. Ok all you Secular Thumpers, keep the sexual perversion at home!

I'm not an advocate of transgender "anything", but if the they couldn't show that it had effected his job (as opposed to might effect), they should not have fired him/her.

    I support Steve Stanton

Thank you, for keeping the story clean and straight. TS Women and Men are human. We need the same things, as any other person. Family, Jobs, Shelter, Food, Clothing and the same chance, as anyone else. Olivea

Ok all you Bible Thumpers take the God talk to CHURCH! REMEMBER Seperate Church from State! You cannot govern my rights as a human. This is a HUMAN Rights Issue I support Steve Stanton. This event is the "Stonewall" of the Transgender movement.

people get over it, if some one wants to stand out, let them do so. People that not right, and them, makes the persons life and living hell. USA is a free, we have right to be are selfs

Give him his job back. Then the only commissoner that can fire him is the one without sin. The one that has the perfect life. You will be allowed to fire him. I rest my case.
    by Dan 03/10/07 12:51 PM
Witnessing all of these religious types coming to the aid of Mr. Stanton, I canò019t help wonder if they all think God made a mistake making him a man and not a women? I for one donò019t think God is fallible. Men should remain as men.
    by Harry 03/10/07 11:32 AM
What would Jesus do? As Donald Trump would say "Your Fired"! Sorry, but I agree with Donald.

There's really no such thing as straight, no such thing as gay. Simply put, some will engage in perverse acts. Whether it's a foot fetish, necrophilia, preying on children, whatever; these people aren't wired right. Should we accept such behavior?
    by Blahton 03/09/07 09:51 PM
I have a house in Largo. I like the city. This issue will get national attention if it actually becomes news. It's not news to me. If this guy's rep is hard-ball manager, why the emotion? I know gay people are around. Will this operation do nicer?
    by Former 327 03/09/07 01:35 PM
Mr. Stanton has no heart for anyone else that has worked for him. He is quick to say no and treat you like a second rate citizen. It is obvious that karma has come full circle. He has an askewed view of life and it reflects in his job.
    by Sam 03/09/07 10:46 AM
Simply, transgenders are suffering from a mental illness. No matter what medical term you want to use, it is a affliction of the brain or mind. Either way every medical document shows therapy has part of the process which confirms an illness!
    by Chris 03/09/07 10:44 AM
i think that it is against the will of God
    by Doug 03/09/07 08:47 AM
Mr. Stanton can thank groups like ILGO and ACTUP for our countries non-acceptance of gay people. If they didn't shove it in our face, most people wouldn't care what they do behind closed doors.
    by Dave 03/09/07 08:41 AM
It took 150 years for officials in Virginia to apoligize for their slave trade practices. How long will it take before the officials in Largo will ?
    by David 03/09/07 08:18 AM
Jesus/religion has nothing to do with this dumb issue. It (Stanton) is a political figurehead and his actions do not represent the moral fiber of the rest of the country. No tolerance of it's actions are necessary! I'm sick of this issue.
    by Todd 03/08/07 08:48 PM
If Mr Stanton had offered his intent to have a sexual reassignment BEFORE his hiring the commissioners would have had that info to consider in his hiring. Once he becomes "Susan" enough of the old personna is gone to create a breach of his contract.
    by Cindy 03/08/07 02:15 PM
Joe, I disagree and obviously many others do too. Based on the informal online poll right here, 65% believe Stanton should not be fired.

re: betrayed that somebody revealed his plans -- hope he has secured a GREAT lawyer to sue the ever-lovin hell out of ALL the leaker(s) & the entities they represent. No doctor-patient privilege for him or anyone else in AmeriKKKa anymore. Hypocrites
    by Sami 03/08/07 01:55 PM
Personally, I couldn't care less what he does privately as long as he does his job. However, he is a fool if he thinks it is easy to keep his public job AND be controversial. I can be controversial, but I am a nobody and nobody cares....
